School Based Council Meeting
May 11, 2004 4:00p.m. - Conference Room

The regular meeting of the school based council was called to order by Tom Purcell, Principal, at 4:00 p.m. Members present: Tom Purcell, James Morgan, Tim Taylor, Scott Kuegel , Sue Krampe and Jim Gilles. A motion was made by Scott Kuegel to begin the meeting. James Morgan seconded the motion and there was consensus.

Approve May Agenda – A motion was made by Tim Taylor to approve the May agenda. James Morgan seconded the motion and there was consensus.

Approve April Minutes – A motion was made by Tim Taylor to approve the April minutes with the following amendment, there is one Assistant Boys Basketball position open. Scott Kuegel seconded the motion and there was consensus.

Student Handbook Changes – Mr. Broughton presented the following changes for the student hand book:

Cell Phones – Students are not to have cell phones on from the time the student enters the school building until 3:15 p.m. The discipline for having cell phones on and using them during school hours is 1 DM, 1 Detention Hall. No calls or text messaging allowed.

Students who would use a cell phone to take pictures would be disciplined accordingly.

Persons who loan their phone to someone else for use would be exposing themselves to the same discipline as the person using their phone. Two (2) dm’s will be issued

Drivers License Requirements - remove this section, no longer a state law.

Portable CD Players/Listening to Music on Laptop – use of a portable CD player with headphones or listening to music on a laptop is not proper use of class time, including study hall. 2 DM’s will be issued.

Parking Lot Violations – 1 DM and 1 Detention Hall for parking in staff parking, on the grass or in a no parking zone. Defiance of authority possible suspension.

IHC – If a student has been issued eight (8) disciplinary referrals, he/she will be sent to In House Crisis for twenty days. Once the student returns to Apollo, the student can receive no more than three (3) additional referrals. Upon receipt of the third referral, a discipline hearing will be scheduled and expulsion will be recommended.

Students who are not completing school work, who are off of schedule to graduate, and who display a blatant disregard to rules, will be recommended, without choice, to transfer to the alternative high school, Beacon Central.

Tim Taylor moved to accept the recommendations, Scott Kuegel seconded the motion and there was consensus.  

Personnel Update - The following positions are open:

  • 1 Assistant Boys Basketball Coaches
  • Art Teaching Position
  • Field Maintenance Worker
  • English Teaching Position
  • Assistant Football Coach
  • Beacon Bus Monitor
  • Rhonda Calloway has been hired for the Science position.
  • Interviews for boys basketball will begin May 12, 2004 .

Budget Update - Mr. Purcell reported that there is $3,258.23 remaining in the Professional Development budget. He also reported that the S.E.E.K. budget has a balance of $10,144.64. Mr. Silberman informed the administrators that they can expect a possible 42% cut in PD and E.S.S. funds.

Final Exams – The Final Exam committee met and discussed the weight of final exams and the number of days exams are given. No decisions were made and the committee will reconvene once school begins in August.

6 weeks vs 9 weeks – Mr Purcell made a recommendation to change from six weeks to 9nweeks. The parent voting response to this was

10 For 6 weeks

Scott Kuegel moved to change from a six weeks grading period to a nine weeks grading period. Tim Taylor seconded the motion and there was consensus.

Training Dates for Council Members – Each council member completed a registration form for council training, with the exception of Mr. Newcom, all members will receive the three hour update training. Mr. Newcom will receive new member training.

Summer meeting dates and times

  • June 15, 12 noon
  • July 20, 12 noon
  • August 17 th, 4:00 p.m.

Other – Mr. Purcell expressed the appreciation of the council, parents, staff and students for the time over the past two years that Mr. Buzz Backstrom has spent as a parent representative on the council.

The date for the next SBDM meeting is Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at noon in the conference room.

There being no further business a motion was made by Scott Kuegel to adjourn at 5:30 p.m. James Morgan seconded the motion and there was consensus.
