International Baccalaureate
INTRODUCTION
The IB Diploma Programme
provides admission to schools throughout the world
for the successful candidate and advanced placement
at approximately 386 leading colleges and universities
in the United States, including the University of
Kentucky.
Apollo students may choose to complete the full diploma
or to participate as a certificate candidate. The
IB program is highly structured and regulated by the
International Baccalaureate offices in Geneva, Switzerland.
As a result of this structure parents and students
must begin making decisions as early as grades seven
and eight. Therefore, it is very important that parents
and students read this brochure to help them prepare
for the future.
There is a cost factor
involved for students participating in this program.
Apollo High School does help to offset the cost.
MISSION STATEMENT
Through comprehensive and
balanced curricula coupled with challenging assessments,
the International Baccalaureate Organization aims to
assist schools in their endeavors to develop the individual
talents of young people and teach them to relate the
experience of the classroom to the realities of the
world outside. Beyond intellectual rigor and high academic
standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of
international understanding and responsible citizenship,
to the end that IB students may become critical thinkers,
lifelong learners and informed participants in local
and world affairs, conscious of the shared humanity
that binds all people together while respecting the
variety of cultures and attitudes that makes for the
richness of life.
EXPECTATIONS
OF STUDENTS
International Baccalaureate
students seek a challenging intensive curriculum incorporating
internationalism into all subject areas. IB students
are required to explore a wide array of topics in each
class while reaching advanced skills in communication,
problem solving, and creative thought. Students considering
participation in the IB programme should be highly motivated
and desire information beyond what is offered
in the traditional classroom. In addition to the six
subject areas students are required to write an extended
essay 4,000 words in length, take a Theory of Knowledge
course, and complete 150 hours of the Creativity, Action,
and Service (CAS) component. To meet these challenges
students need to be self-motivated, goal oriented, independent
learners, and organized.
CURRICULUM
Diploma candidates are
required to select one subject from each of the six
subject groups. At least three and no more than four
must be at the higher level (HL), and the others are
to be taken at the standard level (SL). In this manner
students are able to explore some subjects in depth
and the others more broadly over the two-year period.
The requirements ensure that the science-minded student
is challenged to learn a foreign language and that the
linguist is familiar with laboratory procedures. Assessment
of student performance is both internal and external
(by IBO officials) thus holding the programme to high
standards.
