SENIOR GUIDANCE NEWS: Letter

HAPPY NEW YEAR to each of you! This is not just a new
year but a sad beginning of 2004 with the loss of senior
and friend, Logan Satterly. He will be greatly missed
and thought of quite often by the Class of 2004. Let's
continue to encourage each other and be thoughtful in
our daily lives.
I hope you have registered for the Feb 7, 2004 ACT college
entrance test .that is if you have NOT taken it OR you
want to improve your composite score. Colleges want an
19-20 composite score or higher as an indicator of YOUR
academic success on their campus. Please see me for
help and/or your goal for this important task SOON if
your score is less than 19 (ACT composite score).

on your home PC and applying BEFORE the scholarship deadlines.
There will be a senior class assembly on Tuesday,
1/27/04 during 4 th block in the auditorium---- put
this in your agenda! Make plans to attend!
The SR Financial Aid Parent Meeting will be Thursday,
Jan 15 at 6:30 p.m . in the AHS auditorium. Please
remind your parent(s)! It's very important for
them to attend to get help with completing the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Scholarship Opportunities:
- ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS - Reminder that
UK deadline & UofL deadline is Jan 15, 2004
. You
must have completed an admission application (in the
mail/or online) to these campuses before applying for
their campus based scholarships . And MSU & WKU
deadlines are Feb. 1, 2004.
26. Dept. of Air Force- Third Annual
Wright Scholar Research Assistant Program for summer
2004- this is a PAID internship for seniors interested
in science &/or engineering careers. If interested,
go online at www.pr.afrl.af.mil/jobs/scholar.htm Deadline
is Friday, Jan 16, 2004 .
27. Alcoa Sons & Daughters Scholarship
Program- open to children of US based, full-time,
active, permanent employees of Alcoa, Inc., OR it's wholly-owned
subsidiaries. Applicant must have taken the ACT/SAT I
and be planning on attending a 2-yr./4-yr. college. The
program will award up to 100 four-year scholarships & up
to 50 two-yr. scholarships. Applications available on
Employee InfoLink: go to http://my.alcoa.com click
on the Human Resources tab, then "Other Benefits". Completed
applications must be received by Wednesday, Jan 21, 2004.
28. Anne Ford Scholarship- awards $10,000
to college-bound students with learning disabilities;
must get three letters of recommendations by 1/24 and
write a 750-word essay. Applications are available online
at NCLD's web site, www.LD.org OR
in the guidance office. All application materials
must be postmarked no later than Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.
29. Sam Walton Community Scholarship-
$1,000 scholarship available to seniors with a minimum
GPA of 2.5 and have taken the ACT or SAT I. Seniors already
reveiving a full scholarship OR electing to attend a
military academy will NOT be eligible to receive this
scholarship. You must NOT be a Wal-Mart associate, or
be the immediate relative (son/daughter) of a Wal-Mart
associate. Selection of recipients is based on a combination
of financial need (copy of form 1040 of most recent federal
income tax return required), academic record, ACT/SAT
test scores, co-curricular activities, community involvement
and work experience. Applications are in the guidance
office. All required information must be hand-delivered
by senior student to Wal-Mart by Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004.
30. Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship
Program- If your family is actively engaged in production
agriculture, if you have an average to above average
academic record (minimum ACT composite of 18, SAT I combined
score of 850), and plan to attend in any 2-yr./4-yr.
college. Applicants may pursue any field related to agriculture.
One-time awards of $1,500 will be presented to 100 high
school seniors who meet eligibility reguirements. These
awards are not based on financial need. Applications
may be obtained at: http://www.monsanto.com Completed
appli-cations must be postmarked by Friday, Feb. 13,
2004. (2/15 deadline is on a Sunday-no mail)
31. Auto-related Scholarship- those
seniors enrolled in the Owensboro Technical College auto
body OR auto mechanics program are encouraged to
apply. You must write a 500-word essay on, "Reasons for
seeking additional training in auto related career field". This
opportunity for free scholarship money has a deadline
of Friday, Feb. 13, 2004-to Ms. Kreke .
32. Robert C. Byrd Scholarship- available
to seniors with a minimum ACT score of 23 (or SAT I of
1060); GPA of 3.5 or above (after 7 semesters). There
will be only four applications from AHS forwarded on
for consideration at the state level. Selection at state
level will be based first on merit of GPA, ACT, then
challenges overcome. There is a counselor statement required.
Pick up your application in guidance soon! Please
return student sections to Ms.Kreke by Tuesday, Feb.
3 to allow time for completion of school section, counselor
comments, and narrowing the AHS applicants to four.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS (taken in
May) WILL BE ORDERED IN FEB, 2004!
