SENIOR GUIDANCE NEWS: Letter #7 1/14/04

ITEMS OF IMPORTANCE/INTEREST/SIGNIFICANCE/MEANING/VALUE:

  • Senior Parent Financial Aid Meeting- this week, Thursday, 1/15/04 in AHS auditorium- encourage your parent(s) to attend & bring the FAFSA for help with completing it! This form is a MUST!!
  • Senior Class Assembly on Tuesday, 1/27 will be during CAP time (11:05-11:35), not during 4 th block (put change in your agenda)! WEAR YOUR SENIOR HOODIE/T-SHIRT ON 1/27
  • As you get scholarship award letters, please bring them to guidance (Kreke) so I can get them announced on the PA & in prep for the AHS Honors Night Program.
  • Take ACT at least one before graduating from high school. The next ACT is 2/7/04 (late registration fee is $42 total- deadline is 1/16/04); register online at www.act.org with credit/debit card---use the high school code 182033 (for AHS to get a label for your transcript). This web site also has prep ACT information. The ACT in April is 4/3/04 (registration deadline is 2/27/04 for $26 fee).
  • Seniors attending Owensboro Technical College: Contact Kay Evans or Buddy Hoskinson to take the Skills, Inc Test (three hours long) for a small fee of $10 . Your name & the results are entered into a data base for area employers to use for hiring purposes (after graduation). The cost of this test after graduating (along with the benefits) is $30. Act now & take advantage of this opportunity to responsibly take care of yourself & your employment outlook upon graduating!

College Campus Open Houses (visit & check out their programs/degrees) !

University of Southern Indiana , Evansville, IN- dates- Saturday, Jan 31, and Saturday, Feb. 21; call 1-800-467-1965 to register and for more details. Reminder: This college offers in-state tuition, a small campus setting, and less than an hour from Owensboro.

33. Owensboro Career Development Scholarship- offered to African Americans who are interested in attending 2-yr/4-yr college upon graduation; GPA, test scores, co-curricular involvement, & community involvement are part of the application; amount of awards are still to be determined. Don't miss this opportunity. IAK Scholarship - offered for African Americans that are pursuing the educational field; must be admitted to a college & plan to pursue teaching as a career. Must have participated in at least one leadership acitivity. Appicaiton available in the guidance office. Deadline is Friday, March 26 & mailed to Mr. Richard Brown (postmarked)- don't bring to guidance.

34 . Fifth Third Bank & WFIE TV-Leadership Scholars Program- offering 50 scholarships for $1,000 each to seniors in the tri-state area; Criteria- must have a 2.5 GPA or higher, creative ability, community involvement, obstacles overcome, life goals/interests, etc. Stop by guidance & get application. Deadline for completed application back to Ms. Kreke is Wednesday, 2/18/04.

35. Best Buy Scholarship- go to www.bestbuy.com and click on "community relations" (on the left at the bottom of page) for details & to apply online . Deadline for application is Sunday, 2/15/04.

36 . KY Farm Bureau Education Foundation Scholarship Program for 2004- awards 58 college scholarships; must have either a 3.5 cumulative GPA OR a ACT score of 23 or higher, and be the child of a KY Farm Bureau member family & remain such. (Also, the Wm R. Sprague Scholarship (same application), applicant's parents must be actively engaged in production agriculture). For more details, stop by guidance & pick up an application. Deadline for completed application (postmarked) is Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004.

37 . 2004 Daviess County Farm Bureau Scholarship- must have either a 2.5 GPA OR a ACT score of 19 or higher, be the child of a Daviess Co Farm Bureau member family & remain such, and graduate from high school. (Also, the Tom Curtsinger Scholarship (same application) applicant must major in agriculture). For more details, stop by guidance & pick up an application. Deadline for completed application (postmarked) is Saturday, Feb 28, 2004.

38. Charles A. Reid Memorial Scholarship Fund for Brescia University- must have a 3.0 GPA or higher & plan to attend BU Fall 2004; must complete FAFSA & provide SAR (results of FAFSA) to BU; must write a 150-word essay. Deadline for completed applications mailed to Louisville, KY is Monday, March 1, 2004 (mail by 2/24/04).

39 . National Alliance for Scholastic Achievement- offers amounts of $15,000- $2,000; must have a 2.75 GPA or higher, have taken the ACT/SAT I, planning to attend a 4-yr. campus, and write an essay. Application is available in guidance office OR find it at www.eee.org/bus/nasa
Deadline to mail completed application is Wednesday, March 4 (postmarked).

40. Charles "Chucky" Jones Memorial Scholarship- must be a senior athlete & get a letter of recommendation from a coach; and must write TWO 500-word essay. Deadline to Ms. Kreke is Wednesday, March 17 (completed application).
