SENIOR GUIDANCE NEWS: Letter #8 2/4/04
Reminders:
- College Goal Sunday- College/Tech School could be your ticket to a
rewarding future . Make plans to attend the FAFSA completion meeting
on Sunday, Feb 8 at 2 p.m. at KY Wesleyan College in
Winchester Center, Rogers Hall
- Your Apollo graduation announcement orders will be taken, along with your
check (payable to Balfour), on Friday, Feb. 13 during lunch in
front of the guidance office. Any questions, please see Ms. Kreke OR Ms.
Burton!
- The Spring Homecoming Dance is Friday, Feb 13. Make plans to attend!
- All seniors get one college visit day. Visit a college website and arrange
a campus visit. Then stop in Mr. Broughton's office for the necessary paperwork at
least 24 hours before you go . You must get approval in AHS attendance
office before you make visit in order for this to be an excused
absence .
- Nat'l Assoc. for College Admission Counseling will be hosting a National
College Fair in Louisville, KY on Sunday, March 14 from 1-4
p.m. (12-3 Owensboro time) at the KY Fair & Exposition
Center. This event is free! Go to www.nacac.com/fairs.html for

- Eastern KY University hosting, Spotlight on EKU on
Saturday, Feb 28 & March 20; if interested in attending, call to
register for either date call1-800-465-9191.
- Western KY University hosting Orientation, Advisement,
Registration (OAR) for seniors who've been officially admitted to
WKU for Fall 2004. OAR dates begin March 13. More details in guidance
office!
- University of KY , hosting Women in Engineering Career
Day festivities on Friday, Feb. 27 from 8:00-3:00 p.m. Female students with
a strong interest in math or science are encouraged to attend; website is www.engr.uky.edu/wie/introduce.html for

- ACT Test Dates remaining: Saturday, 4/3/04, deadline
registration is Feb. 27; and Saturday, 6/12/04, deadline registration is
May 7. Important to take this college entrance test and make a composite
of 19 or higher IF making plans to attend a four year college in the fall
2004. Any qts., see Ms. Kreke!
- ACT Prep classes are offered at Owensboro Community
College for the April 3 rd ACT. Just Math dates: 3/2, 3/9, & 3/16; 6:30-8:30
p.m.; cost $24 (+$17 for book) & Just English : 3/2, 3/9, 3/16; 6;00-8:00
p.m.; cost $24 (+$19 for book). Call 686-4444 to register & for
information of where class(es) will meet. Act now, don't delay!

Feb 15.
41 . Better Business Bureau- 2004 Richard E. Akers
Ethics in Action Scholarships - offers a $1,000 scholarship plus
others; criteria: must get two letters of recommendations from teachers;
transcript, 1-pg. Summary of co-curricular/community involvement and read
the enclosed article, On Ethical Dilemnas & write a one-page essay concerning
an ethical dilemna that student has faced and resolved. Deadline for
completed application materials is Monday, March 1 (postmarked).
42 7 th Annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of
the Year (SAMMY 2004) Award Program - criteria : academic performance,
athletic excellence, leadership, community service, and milk experience. SAMMY
2004 applications will only be accepted online at www.whymilk.com until
Friday, March 5.
43. I.A.K. Scholarship - awarded to a senior who has been
accepted to college and plans to pursue teaching as a career . Applicants
must have participated in at least one leadership activity and be of high moral
character. The AHS scholarship committee will choose one senior to receive
a one-time $2,000 award! Applications are now available in the Guidance
Office. Must have an ACT score of 21 or higher; sponsored by Stu & Kathi
Silberman. Deadline to apply is Tuesday, March 9 to Ms. Kreke.
44. David Latham Scholarship - offered to any senior going
to college/tech school; must write a 500-word essay, "Why continuing your education
is a vital opportunity in your life". Deadline to apply is Thursday, March
11 to Ms. Kreke.
45 . A.B. "Happy" Chandler Scholarship -
offers $2,000 per semester toward tuition; criteria : must be going full-time
to a KY college/university fall 2004; must be active in community service, &/or
school activities, &/or employment; must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA OR an
ACT score of 25 or higher; must submit a 500-word essay about your professional
plans after college (prefer two-page handwritten essay); and must provide two letters
of recommendation with one being from a teacher and one from a professional
outside the school system. Application is in the guidance office. Deadline
to mail completed application is Friday, March 12 (postmarked).
46 . Independence Bank "Spirit of Independence" Scholarship and Chelsea
Mudd Scholarship - At Independence Bank, their belief in the value
of higher education is the reason they offer TWO scholarships
in the amount of $10,000. The Chelsea Mudd Scholarship is named in
honor of an outstanding student-athlete at Owensboro Catholic High School
who died on December 2, 2000. To apply for the scholarships the student
must first pick up an application in the guidance office. Required
is a typed essay not to exceed one page titled "The Value of a Higher
Education (Spirit of Independence applicants) OR "The Importance of
Academics for an Athlete" (Chelsea Mudd applicants), a transcript with
most recent ACT scores, and completed application must be received by
Mr. Chris Reid no later than Monday, March 15, 2004.
47 .Commonwealth Credit Union- "Nathan Leach Reach
for the Stars" Scholarship - This $4,000 scholarship was developed
to recognize academic achievement among young Commonwealth Credit Union members
and to promote higher education. Applicants must be a high school senior,
member of Commonwealth Credit Union (Commonwealth Credit Union serves people
who participate in a Kentucky State Retirement System. These include: KY
Employees Retirement System, KY Teachers Retirement System, County Employees
Retirement System, KY State Police Retirement System. Relatives of
CCU members can join the credit union in order to be eligible for the CCU
Scholarship Program. Membership application can be found at www.ccuky.org Applications
are available in the Guidance Office. All scholarship entries must
be received at Commonwealth Credit Union in Frankfort, KY no later than 4
p.m. EST Friday, March 26, 2004
