Congratulations to our National Achievement Scholarship Program Finalists : Katrina Boone & Michael Boone.

These seniors have prepared themselves for future academic and financial success as they enter college fall 2004! We are excited for them and wish them the best of luck!!

The following seniors will be representing Apollo in the Messenger-Inquirer Academic All-Star Team nominated by our faculty. They are: Arts , Amber Richeson; English , AJ Estes; Foreign Languages , Landon Basham; Journalism , AJ Estes; Math , Landon Basham; Science , Michael Boone; and Social Studies , AJ Estes. These seniors will be attending an awards ceremony and reception on April 29. Congratulations and good luck!

CAN I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION---PLEASE:

  • Graduation announcements can be ordered one last time on Thursday, 2/19/04 . Bring your check (payable to Balfour) & order form to the area outside the attendance office during your lunch.
  • Many seniors took the 2/7 ACT----YEAH!! The next ACT is April 3, and the registration deadline is Friday, 2/27. Register online at www.act.org OR with a registration packet (found in the guidance office); cost is $26 (if would like a fee waiver, see Ms. Kreke); use the high school code: 182033 so AHS will get a copy of your score/label for your transcript.

Scholarship Opportunities:

*** The John B. & Brownie Young Memorial Fund scholarship process HAS BEGUN.

  • If you rank 1-102, please log onto www.scholarshipadministrators.net and complete the eight steps online.
  • You may apply online OR print paper version & complete it, using black ink .
  • A short essay is required (less than 300 words).
  • Your parent(s) must complete the FAFSA in order for you to pursue this opportunity .
  • Deadline says 3/1 (online, pg. 2, application procedure), and pg. 3 says guidance counselor deadline (postmarked) is Thursday, April 1. Therefore, deadline to Ms. Kreke is Tuesday, March 16.
  • If you don't have access to a computer to apply online, stop in & get a paper copy from Ms. Kreke.

48 . Kenergy Scholarship - Kenergy is offering up to ten (10) $1,000 scholarships to assist in financing the higher education of students whose parents are electric customers of Kenergy.  The scholarships are available to any eligible student who will be enrolled in a college or university, technical school or proprietary trade school in the fall of 2004.  Download an application from their website at www.kenergycorp.com or pick up a copy in the Guidance Office.  Applications not postmarked or received by Friday, March 5, 2004 cannot be considered.  

49. University of KY, Society of Women Engineers and Women in Engineering Programs, offers four $500 scholarships. Must be considering the field of engineering at UK; must write a short essay (max. 500 words). Deadline (postmarked) is March 5 and have to been admitted to UK.

50. Girls Incorporated Scholarship, governs the mission of, "Building Women of Tomorrow: Strong, Smart & Bold- offers a $1,000 scholarship. Criteria: senior who encompasses their mission, based on financial need, and can't be receiving other scholarships. Deadline to Ms. Kreke is Tuesday, March 16.

51 . Kappa Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher Scholarship --- NEW!  $500 scholarship will be given to a senior who will be an education major in college.  Write a letter to the Kappa Chapter telling why you deserve and/or need the scholarship.  Please explain about your chosen major and why you want to be a teacher.  Also include your school and community activities and how they have influenced your high school life and community involvement.  Please send a copy of your academic transcript including ACT/SAT test scores to Peggy Stemle, Scholarship Committee, 4559 Thruston Dermont Road, Owensboro, KY  42303.  Application must be received by Tuesday, March 30 to Ms. Stemle.

52. NFIB Free Enterprise Scholars Award (National Federation of Independent Business) - The Education Foundation created this award to identify and recognize young people who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit/initiative.  The program will reward at least 100 students nationwide with a $1,000 scholarship.  These scholarships are not based on financial need. 

Any student entering their freshman year at an accredited two- or four-year university, college, or vocational institute.

Applicants must be nominated by a dues-paying member of NFIB.  If students want to contact an NFIB member about their application, they can call the NFIB Member Care Center at 1-800-634-2669 for further assistance.

Applicants must meet or exceed recommended academic standards, using standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), class rang and GPA as indicators provided in high school records/transcripts.  As a general rule, applicants should rank in the top quarter of their graduating class.  

Award recipients are selected by an independent scholarship organization.

On-line applications can be found on www.nfib.com/education , and they are also available in the Guidance Office.   Applicants may download the application to complete and submit with their high school transcripts.   Please note that there is a record request form that must be signed by a guidance counselor.   Applications will be accepted January 1, 2004 through March 31, 2004.   Additional information is available on www.nfib.com/education or students may contact Chantel Bartlett at chantel.bartlett@nfib.org or 1-800-552-6342.

53. Pauline C. Young Scholarship - New!  The Young Scholars Program awards full-cost scholarships for Kentucky students to pursue their education beyond high school.  The following criteria is emphasized:  students who have made the most of their educational opportunities; the potential for local community development within career desires; and financial need.  On-line application may be found at www.kyscholarships.org or you may pick up a copy in the Guidance Office.  There is a Counselor section that must be submitted to Ms. Kreke no later than Monday, March 15th.   All completed applications must be received by the Pauline S. Young Scholarship Foundation, Inc. no later than Wednesday, March 31, 2004.   

54. Daviess County Homemakers Scholarship - $750 scholarship is for graduating seniors that must be majoring in family/consumer sciences or health-related fields for the fall of 2004.  These include:  Family and Consumer Science majors: FCS education, dietetics, nutrition science, food science, textiles and fashion merchandising, early childhood education, interior design, hospitality management, family studies, family therapy or other family related sciences in the school/college of human environmental science.  Human health related majors:   nursing, pre-med, dentistry, chiropractor, lab technology, and other human health related majors.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office.  Applications must be received by UK's Cooperative Extension Office on New Hartford Rd., Owensboro NO LATER than Thursday, April 1, 2004.
