Dear
Parent(s):
My
name is Ms. Jan Young and I am the guidance counselor
that will work with your son/daughter for the next three
years. During these years, I will be meeting with all
sophomores to review their transcripts as well as their
chosen level of diploma. Information regarding what each
diploma requires can be found in the student’s agenda
book. Every student will receive an agenda book at the
beginning of the school year. Information regarding diplomas,
grading scale, attendance and school policies can be found
in the agenda, and we encourage all parent(s) to review
it. Students are encouraged to use the agenda to record
homework assignments, grades they receive, and important
dates that apply to their grade level.
It
is extremely important that you are aware that beginning
with the Class of 2004, all students must have all
credits necessary for the specific diploma in order to
PARTICIPATE IN THE GRADUATION CEREMONIES. Students
are informed of this policy and we ask you to remind your
son/daughter of this as well. In reviewing all sophomore
transcripts which reflect credits, I found students who
did not receive either a half or full credit in required
classes. It is imperative that you are aware of the total
credits that your son/daughter is receiving each semester.
Summer school is available and is free to the student.
Be aware of the opportunities that a student has to make
up the credit deficiencies. By doing this, the student
will increase their chances of completing the number of
credits, and the senior year will not be a struggle for
them.
You
will also begin receiving scholarship information in the
mail from outside financial sources. Please remember
that no one can guarantee that they will get you a grant
or scholarship. There are many free lists of scholarships
available to you now such as www.fastweb.com.
Begin your research for monies here; this service is free.
If you do decide to meet with a financial representative,
do not give out your credit card or bank account number
without checking with the Better Business Bureau (800-488-2222)
to see if this program is legitimate.
Throughout
the year I will visit the classrooms to hand out newsletters
with information for sophomores to read. These letters
will also be posted on the Apollo website – www.ahs.dcps.org.
At the top of the screen, click on Guidance, then look
to the left and click in the Sophomore section for the
various letters and information.
I
look forward to meeting with your son/daughter as he/she
begins the sophomore year. If you would like to meet
with me throughout the year, please call the guidance
office (852-7105); speak to Mrs. Kristi Tong, and she
will set up an appointment.
Sincerely,
Jan
Riney Young
