HELLO SOPHOMORE PARENT (S):
I would like to take this time to welcome you and your son/daughter
to a new school year. At this time, I would like to
introduce myself as your son/daughter’s counselor
and will continue to do so until they graduate. At
the end of August, a letter will be sent to your home
from me with information regarding credits, scholarship
searches, and websites.
All sophomores will be taking the PLAN
test on October 30th at no cost to the student. The
PLAN is very similar to the ACT test that students take
when preparing for technical, two-year, and four-year
post-secondary institutions. The PLAN will test the
student’s knowledge in math, science, and English.
The student will also take the career interest section
of the test and I will use this throughout the year.
The Discover College will have their annual
showcase on September 23. All sophomores will attend
this program in which they will have the opportunity
to talk with community employers, technical and post-secondary
representatives, and hear a motivational speaker talk
on the importance of education in their life.
Throughout the year, I will be giving
information to the sophomores and this will be done
in a letter format that students will receive in either
their Fine Arts or English class.
The letters will also be posted on the
Apollo website – www.ahs.dcps.org. Find the sectional titled
“Quick Links,” and then click on the AHS
Guidance News. Click again on the Sophomore Guidance
Information to view the letters. I encourage you to
also read the senior letters to learn about scholarship
and financial aid information.
Your son/daughter’s Personal Identification
Number (PIN) is available in the guidance office. This
allows you to check daily grades, homework assignments,
as well as email information. It is extremely important
that you are aware that beginning with the Class
of 2004, all students must have all credits necessary
for the specific diploma in order to PARTICIPATE IN
THE GRADUATION CEREMONIES. Please make sure
that you are aware of the diploma type that your son/daughter
is seeking.
