study and greater practice in translation. Selections
will be translated from the story of Hercules and Caesar’s

LATIN III Honors Semesters 2

Third year Latin is a course that will take students
beyond the elementary level of reading and understanding
Latin literature. Cicero’s Orations Against Catiline
provide the foundation for this course, for Latin without
Cicero is like English without Shakespeare. In addition
to Cicero, time will be spent translating post-classical
Latin, written between 400-1500 A.D. This section emphasizes
the continuing use of Latin as a means of communication
many centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire.
LATIN IV AP Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
Fourth year Latin is designed to prepare the student
for the Vergil AP Latin Exam. The basis of the course
will be Vergil’s epic poem, the Aeneid. Parts
of books I, II, IV, and VI will be translated from the
Latin, and the remainder of the epic will be read in
English. The student will also become familiar with
pertinent Roman culture, social, and political history,
as well as literary figures of speech and poetic scansion.
