ROTC: Ready to drill and orientier
by: Matthew Johnson
Sports Editor
April 15-18, the ROTC orientierring team competed at nationals in Indiana. For those who don't know what orientierring is, it is basically where a team gets only a map and a compassto complete a difficult journey through an unmarked course. The team goes through the woods to find contol points. The team members, when they find these control points, punch their cards to prove that the group indeed met at those particular control points. In order to successfully complete the trek, the team has to punch their cards at the control points in numerical order. If they do not do so, the team is automatically disqualified. In addition to all of all the difficult tasks, there is usually a three hour time limit to complete all of the required control points.
Although this event might seem like a waste of time for some, there are definitly several benefits to orienterring. Not only does it allow the teams to travel, but each member is also allowed to keep in shape and have fun.
The ROTC group is headed by Colonol Paul and their Commander is Kristen Lewis.
The ROTC Drill Team has also competed in many events on October 25th, November 1st, and February 21st. The 21st was the 2nd annual at Apollo. The weapons used by the Drill Teams are M1 rifles and sabres. The Drill Team performs at Homecoming, football games, basketball games, for the Daviess County School Board, and local parades. The leaders for the Drill Team are Sergeant Parker and their Commander, Junior Aunjuane Hawthorne.
Another group associated with the ROTC program is the Color Guard. This group also performs at several Apollo events such as Homecoming, basketball games, football games, and the Veterans Day parade. Their Commander is Junior, Jake List.
Some of the upcoming ROTC events are Summer Leadership School in June, FTX in April, Dining in November, Dining Out in May., and the Military Ball in January.
