Daniel, actually.
By: Daniel M. Tilford
Reporter
My friend called me up last night, wanting
to see if I was interested in watching the new Hugh Grant
vehicle and I- ofcourse- immediately said yes, and told
her I'd see her promptly at 7:00, knowing full well that
she wouldn't show up until 15 minutes after the movie
was supposed to start. It was about 6:15, and I had an
hour to kill before the movie started, so I drove down
to the library to get a couple of cds.
A small note here: I recently got a new computer, which
has a cd burner, and not that I endorse pirating, nor
do I care particularly for burning cds- stealing the small
amount of money that the artists I listen to get already-
but I'm kind of on this music kick, and I wanted some
new records to listen to, and I'm trying to save my money
for Christmas, and yeah, make a short story much longer
than it obviously had to be, I have 11 cds waiting to
be burned at home. Oh, and they're all real classy too.
I got some Miles Davis, and some Dylan (say what you will,
I still love his voice), a couple by Nick Drake, and this
really good Velvet Underground one with Nico on it. Maybe
I should send them a check for the 12 cents they're missing
out on.
Anyway, before I go to the movie, I drop the cds off at
my house- because I'm worried that they'll freeze in the
car- and after me and my mommy get into a short fight,
I pull off and turn up the Frank Black. Not necessarily
out of spite or anything. Moreso because he rocks, and
I'd consider it disrespectful to try to keep his voice
under a certain decibal level. But, either way, the music
gets turned up a good 8 or 9 notches, and I'm singing
along with track 3 as I make my way to the theatre.
I pull up, and I'm a horrible driver, so I'm parked all
crooked , and I turn the music off, and lock my doors.
And I go inside, and it's warm- in sharp contrast to the
weather outside- and I'm kind of hoping this girl is there,
who I find somwhat interesting for one reason or another,
but she's not, so I sit next to one of my friends, on
a bench, and try to talk her out of watching Gothika.
My friend Mary shows up, by some act of God, 5 minutes
early, and we talk for a few minutes and I make jokes,
in bad taste of course, since those are the only type
I make, and we all decide to see Love Actually together.
And, I actually enjoy it, and find myself getting somewhat
teary eyed at the end, when the couple you really hoped
would get together, end up actually getting together.
Real men do, it seems, love Hugh Grant, and all of his
quirky Britishness.
