In the history of Apollo High School, there have
been some important events happen in January. There have been natural disasters
and famous people that have visted Apollo.
In January 1991, Apollo's Eagle High Trust opened for the first time. It
was pretty much run how student do it today. There was a $ 500 limit
on the savings account and students could only have four withdrawls per
month.
Two events happened in January of 2000. On January 3, a tornado hit the Owensboro
area. Apollo was one of the places that was hardest hit. There was raining
in the 300's and the 400's and books were ruined in the library. The Agricultural
Department's Greenhouse was destroyed; the only thing left was its frame. Mr.
Dayton Heffelfinger's trailer lost it roof.
The football field's press box caved in. The fencing was also torn and the
baseball bleachers were strung out to Gemini Drive. On January 10th, we were
declared a Federal Disaster Area. Students and teachers were out of school
from January 4th to January 12th. January 13th was their first day back.
A couple weeks late Miss America, Heather French, came to visit the area. She
also was Miss Kentucky. She visited the site and talked to students at various
schools including Apollo and Burns Middle School.
Last year, Senator Mitch McConnell wisited Apollo. At Apollo, he presented
a check to the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative. The check
was accepted by WKU president, Gary Randell.
We have had some important
events happen in January at Apollo. Those were just a few of the events
that have happened.
