Teach yourself to be wrong
by: Brandon Farmer
Senior Editor

You are wrong. Do you not hate hearing that? But, maybe it's true! In life, there are no absolute certainties, only points of view. A short time ago, I read an amazing book titled, Beyond Good or Evil by a man named Friedirich Nietzchse. This book (although I have yet to finish) has opened my eyes to things that I should have always known. Now, far be it from me to ask anyone to go out of their way to read this book, but trust me, it is excellent. Therefore, I am going to share and attempt to apply some of his teachings in this article.

As previously stated, there are no absolute truths, only points of view in ALL matters. In other words, to find any kind of "truth" in life, a person has to make a leap of faith at the beginning. It just becomes so natural to a person that they do not realize it and consider it to be the truth. Refrain from those kind of assumptions now, and learn to question them. Everything in life (politics, religion, etc.) has many points of view. A person cannot get the whole story unless they are able to discard their beliefs and look at it a different way.

I will admit it is extremely difficult for most people to make this kind of commitment. In fact, there are many times (most of the time) that I have almost too hard a time to consider that my collection of "truths" may be wrong, and try to look at them in a different way. The best method I have found is to compleletly shun my opinions and interpretations of any incident and try to pick up another's thoughts. In this way, my mind is like a clean slate and open for any kind of new information, so that I can learn.
I implore readers to try this method of thinking and living. I guarantee that some of the people that attempt this will pick up knowledge and ideas that they never knew were out in the world. Let me give you an example or two about taking part of different points of view.

The best example that I can think of is the subject of war. I do not mean any war in particular, just in general. Look at how most wars have begun; both sides thinking they are right, and that they are the good guys. The fact of the matter is that they are only the "good guys" because they perceive themselves that way. Likewise, their enemies think that they are the "good guys" and their enemies as the "bad guys". In truth, the only thing that makes them different is the interpretation that we, the spectators, and the people fighting apply to themselves. Maybe, if each side could try to remove themselves from their "truths" and look at it a different way, maybe their enemy's way, changes could be made.

Another way this could be done is through religion. I know that this may seem to be a rather taboo subject, but think about it! Have you not ever questioned the beliefs that have been reinforced upon you? Ever wondered what else might be out in the world? Give it a try, and test exactly how much you believe in your faith. Remember, any sort of belief has to be met with a leap of faith at it's base. This includes even atheism. At its core, if someone wishes to be atheist, they must put faith into the idea that there is no faith. Having faith is not an easy task to undertake, but it is worth it. Once a person can begin this thought pattern, it gets easier with every passing day.

I must say this is not nearly enough space to explain this topic properly. Nor am I the one to do it, but I wanted the people at our school to at least, read this and become curious about their convictions and, to possibly, put them to the test against others in this world. Hopefully, if anyone attempts this they will learn more about things they never dreamed about. So enjoy.
