DCPS meet at mall for arts and music fest
by: Samantha Hayes - Associate news editor

Saturday March twentieth was the very first day of the visual arts display in the mall. Elementary schools from Tamarack to West Louisville, and high schools such as Daviess County High ad their work on display.

From a large painting on the glass walls, to a map of Lewis and Clarke's journey with a paper boat below it, there was a varied assortment of works that were displayed for the enjoyment of all.

Art was not all that was on display in the mall. On March twenty first, Apollo's own chorus sang for the benefit of those attending. The songs included songs such as, 'I Hear America Singing.'

Yet the arts and music festival did not end at that. Children from elementary schools performed a line dance while all wearing matching outfits.

The singing, dancing, and art were not just for fun, though. Handouts were given out that explained what the DCPS arts and music festival was all about.

The visual arts overview consisted of elements of art, the art process, and the purposes of the art, so that a person could understand why a painting was on display.

Also, the musical assesment was composed of the elements of music, the cultures that each type of music originated, and the music genres of the time. This part of the handout helped to explain why the songs that Apollo's chorus sang, such as 'I Hear America Singing,' actually had meaning and purpose.

In addition to singing, the dance assessment area of the handout proved that the elementary students were not just dancing around for the fun of it. The line dance that was performed was explained through dance communication, priciples of composition, and cultures and periods that the dance originated in.

The visual arts display will be on display from march 20th to April sixteenth, and the band, chorus, and orchestra of Daviess County High School will prefom from the twenty second of March to the twenty fifth.

Arts and music festival committee consists of Shelia Ann Miller, Pam Howell, and Marilyn Mills and the festival logo was created by Shelley Edelschick.

The festival was also backed by the superintendent, Stu Silberman, and the board members Mary Tim Griffen, Frank Riney, John Ed Dunn, Joe Overby, and Dwight Lovan.

To find out more information on the festival be sure to contact any of the people mentioned before, or Mrs. Elliot, the chorus teacher at Apollo High School.

When asked about singing at the arts and music fest junior Dennae Miller says that ' I can't wait until next year when we can do it again!'
