Principle of the thing:
Winter Sports Wrap-up

As I sat in Rupp Arena last Thursday watching the clock click down to 0:00, I was suddenly reminded of what a successful winter sports season Apollo High School had just experienced.

Although numbers were few, our swimmers experienced another fine season under the direction of Coach Crabtree.

Joey Stone and Chip Gossett represented Apollo High School in wrestling this year. Joey went onto to qualify for the state tournament this past season. He finished sixth in his weight division.

Our Eaglettes once again proved to be the best in the region and received yet another trip to the National Dance Competition in Orlando, Florida. They were recently voted the number one dance to in the tri-state area ‘Dance Fever” contest sponsored by WFIE. They will receive $1,000 for this honor. Congratulations to Coach Cecil and our ladies for being the best.

“Apollo Eagles” is often a cheer one hears being led by the 9th District and 3rd Region cheerleading champions. Coach Schmeal and our cheerleaders proved to be the best once again and earned a trip to Richmond to compete in the KAPOS state cheerleading competition. Our ladies finished eighth and were very proud of their accomplishments.
Our E-gal basketball team had a very successful season that ended in a heartbreaking double overtime loss to OCHS in the opening round of the 9th District tournament. That game was probably the most exciting basketball game I witnessed in some time. Who can forget the victory the E-gals had at Muhlenburg North to end North’s winning streak over third region teams. I believe North had gone three years without losing to a third region team. Great job E-gals and Coach Powers.

Last but certainly not least, the Eagles won their seventh 3rd Region basketball championship by defeating Breckenridge County in the finals. The team earned a trip to Sweet Sixteen and was defeated by the eventual state champions, Warren Central. Coach Baughn and the Eagles endured a very tough schedule and were truly rewarded for their efforts with the 3rd region championship.

Thanks to everyone who made the winter sports season a success. A special thank you goes out to all those who volunteered and helped make our hosting the 3rd Region boys basketball tournament a huge success.
