Softball team has enormous garage sale

The E-Gals softball team organized a fundraiser on the weekend of May 15th unlike any used in the past by the team.

In accordance with the idea of coaches Bullington and Carpenter, a community-contributions garage sale went under way in the softball field parking lot.
Drawing items from teammembers, students, parents and the community, this garage sale was enormous. Goods such as old toys, clothes furniture, art, and musical instruments were up for purchase.

"I don't know if I can handle this. I'll be buying everything," said Coach Bullington.
The idea for the event was a joint effort among the coaches as an attempt to maximize the team's profit.

"This fundraiser is a good money-maker," said teammember Katie Carpenter. "All the money will go directly to us instead of the usual percentage going to a company."

The team is in need of all the money it can get. Not only does it need money to get into tournaments, it also needs new bats and balls, which can be expensive.

Plus, this season it is the goal of the team to build up a program to match everyone else's. This makes the erection of a hitting building essential.

Such a building is a great aid to any team when practicing on rainy days.

This garage sale was more successful than most other fundraisers the team has used.
"Families are cleaning out their houses and we got it all," said Coach Bullington.

The income from this outweighed that of the team's Hit-A-Thon fundraiser, during which people were able to put in a donation for each ball hit.

"It wasn't so much work and we sold alot," said Bulllington of the best points of the garage sale, "and the girls got to spend time together."

Coach Bullington said, "I've had garage sales at my home that brought in $200 or $300. I knew this would bring us alot of money."

And it has, thanks to the efforts of the Owensboro community. Many who donated as well as those who purchased items help enormously with their support.
However, it could not have been put together without volunteer hours of many parents. The hard work and dedication of the softball team has made the first Softball garage sale fundraiser a success.
