Apollo High
School’s Student-Initiated, Student-
Funded Students for Life Club Hoping Taking Baby
Steps Will Save More Babies
Apollo High School had twelve students participate
in the 22nd Annual Walk for Life sponsored by Owensboro’
s Right to Life. The greater participation was a result
of the efforts of Apollo’s new club, Students
for Life, founded by senior, Chelsea Freels and sponsored
by Mrs. Jennifer Higdon. The mission of the club is
to keep the debate over Roe vs. Wade alive and educate
members about how human life develops, the procedures
used in abortions, and alternatives to abortion. The
club promotes that most everyone has a choice- a choice
not to engage in behavior resulting in an unwanted
baby.
The group meets the second Monday morning of every
month at 7:30 a.m.. The meetings include guest speakers,
educational videos, discussion about recent events,
and planning for activities and events focused on
preserving life. Guest speakers at meetings range
from people who have had abortions, to people who
have adopted children, doctors, and others active
in the pro-life movement. Discussion at recent meetings
has focused on the Lacy Peterson murder case and how
Scott Peterson has been charged with double homicide
for a baby killed in utero because California has
a Fetal Homicide Charge. Many states do not have this
charge. Discussion has also brought to light how some
babies born at six months in utero are given birth
certificates while those aborted at six months are
not.
Members of the Club have encountered many people
who believe the abortion debate is a “dead”
issue, a decision not likely to be overturned. Members
of the Club have also encountered many Pro-Choice
advocates who are unaware of techniques and procedures
used in abortion, what the law states regarding abortions,
or when fetal tissue takes on human form. For example,
most people have no idea that Kentucky does not have
a ban on partial birth abortions, a procedure where
the baby’s entire body is delivered except the
head, an incision is made in the base of the skull,
a tube is inserted, and the baby’s brains are
sucked out.
The Students for Life currently has 25 members. Officers
of Students for Life are President, Chelsea Freels;
Vice-President, Natalie Freels; Secretary, Elaina
Reid; Public Relations, Stacy Richmond; Research Chair,
Brittany Stallings; and Membership Chair, Alexander
Roberts.
Members of Students for Life want to educate and
witness to the facts concerning abortion because everyone
should have the opportunity to make an informed choice
based on facts and knowledge, not just a choice based
on retrace from the media, etc. Ultimately, Students
for Life would like to see society take baby steps,
a series of compromises in laws restricting abortion,
resulting in giant leaps towards saving more babies.
