Pennyrile Meet #1
The Apollo academic team began the 2003-2004 competition
season, its 20th, by competing in Pennyrile Academic Association
meet #1 at Henderson County High School Sept. 8.
The varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Henderson
County 34-10 and Madisonville-North Hopkins 23-20. Katrina
Boone led the team in scoring with 6 tossups per match, followed
by A.J. Estes, Michael Boone, Landon Basham, Emily Pearl,
Bart Swift and Tyler Sagardoy.
The junior varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating
Henderson County 26-4 and Madisonville-North Hopkins 20-17.
Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per
match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Caroline Buchanan, Will Pierce
and Andrea Stone.
Varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities - tied
for 2nd, Ashley McMichael and Taryn Rice; 4th, Caroline Buchanan;
6th, Rachel Gentry. Language Arts - 1st, A.J. Estes; 3rd,
Emily Pearl; tied for 4th, Elaina Reid and Brittany Roberts.
Social Studies - 1st, Bart Swift; tied for 3rd, Katrina Boone

Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament
Two Apollo quick recall teams participated in the Ezell-Harding
Christian School Academic Tournament in Antioch, Tennessee,
Sept. 20. The tournament featured 43 teams from 6 states.
In the tournament, teams were divided into pools and each
team played five preliminary matches. The top two teams from
each pool advanced to a 16-team single-elimination playoff,
seeded by win-loss records and total points in the preliminaries.
Dorman H.S. A of Spartanburg, S.C., the No. 1 seed and defending
NAQT national champions, placed first by defeating No. 2
seed Milton H.S. A of Alpharetta, Ga., 230-180 in the championship
match. DuPont Manual H.S. of Louisville, Ky., the No. 3 seed
placed third and Walton H.S. A of Marietta, Ga., the No.
4 seed, placed fourth.
Apollo A went 4-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents
1,510 to 1,180, and brought their season record to 6-2. They
went 4-1 in the preliminaries and advanced to the playoffs
as the No. 11 seed. They went 0-1 in the playoffs and tied
for ninth place out of 43 teams. A.J. Estes led the team
in scoring with 6 tossups per match, followed by Katrina
Boone, Michael Boone and Landon Basham. Apollo B went 2-3
in the preliminaries, outscored their opponents 1,100 to
1,080, missed the playoffs by one win, and placed 24th. Elizabeth
Rogers led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match,
followed by Bart Swift, Tyler Sagardoy, Emily Pearl and Ian
Wilkey.
Preliminary match results were: Round 1 - AHS A defeated
Portland (Tenn.) H.S. C, 340-90; AHS B lost to Johnson Central
A of Paintsville, Ky., 320-220. Round 2 - AHS A defeated
Hardin County H.S. of Savannah, Tenn., 310-100; AHS B lost
to Cookeville (Tenn.) H.S. A, 260-180. Round 3 - AHS A defeated
Cookeville B, 270-200; AHS B defeated Boyd-Buchanan H.S.
of Chattanooga, Tenn., 250-130. Round 4 - AHS A defeated
Rossview H.S. A of Clarksville, Tenn., 240-230; AHS B defeated
Lincoln County (Tenn.) H.S., 230-80. Round 5 - AHS A lost
to Knoxville (Tenn.) West H.S. A, 250-230; AHS B lost to
Milton H.S. B. of Alpharetta, Ga., 290-220.
Playoff match results were: Round of 16 - No. 11 seed Apollo
A lost to No. 6 seed Johnson Central A, 310-120.

The Apollo academic team hosted Pennyrile Academic Association
meet #2 Sept. 22.
The varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Hopkinsville
36-10 and Webster County 32-7, improving their Pennyrile
record to 4-0 and their overall record to 8-2. Michael Boone
led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match, followed
by Katrina Boone, A.J. Estes, Tyler Sagardoy, Bart Swift
and Emily Pearl.
The junior varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating
Hopkinsville 24-8 and Webster County 31-1. Elizabeth Rogers
led the team in scoring with 10 tossups per match, followed
by Ian Wilkey, Roel Flores, Will Pierce, Thomas Cameron and
Jeremy Early.

ASMA Contest #1
Sixty-seven Apollo math students participated in the American
Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #1 Oct. 8. The
contest involved solving seven math problems. Ian Wilkey
was the top scorer with a perfect score of 7. He was followed
by: tied for 2nd, Landon Basham, T.J. Daugherty and Ryan
Seabolt; tied for 5th, Katrina Boone, Britt Lacefield, Travis
McMaine, Eric Perkins, Robert Skaggs, Grant Todd and David
Zimmerman; tied for 12th, Michael Boone, Caroline Buchanan,
John Clark, Ashley Estes, Katie Hagan, Ryan Lilly, Megan
Purdy, Stephanie Raley and Stephanie Schmitt.
