NCEL Meet #1

On Nov. 6, three hundred, thirty-two AHS students took part in the National Current Events League Meet #1. The meet consisted of 30-question, multiple choice tests covering current events from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31.

Grade 9 (202) participants)-1st, Alex Whitehead; second, Jeremy Taylor; tied for 3rd, Erica Frizzell and Alma Valdez; tied for 5th, Seth Bodnar, Josh Brooks, Wei Ji, Tyler Logsdon and Logan Meadows; tied for 10th, Brooke Beals, Travis Case, Matt Damin. Bailey Davis, Roel Flores and Ryan Hendrix; tied for 16th, Ryan Carrico, Joseph Coker, Tristan Hoover, Andrew Stelmach and Tyler Young.

Grade 10-12 (130) participants)-tied for 1st, Michael Boone and A.J. Estes; tied for 3rd, Katrina Boone, Drew Burden, Clayton Carden, Tyler Sagardoy and Shane Sikes; tied for 8th, Emily Pearl and Brandon Reynolds; tied for 10th, Rachel Gentry, B.J. ASMA Contest #1

Seventy-two Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #2 Nov. 11. The contest involved solving seven math problems. Landon Basham and Ryan Seabolt were the top scorers with scores of 6. They were followed by: 3rd, Eric Perkins; tied for 4th, Michael Boone, Ian Wilkey and David Zimmerman; tied for 7th, Katrina Boone, Angela Davidson, Diedre Gentry, Tyler Sagardoy, Amanda Saunders, and Robert Skaggs.

Hart County Invitational

The Apollo quick recall teams placed 9th in the 21st Annual Hart County Invitational Academic Tournament at Hart County High School in Munfordville, Nov. 8. The double-elimination tournament featured 16 teams representing each of Kentucky's basketball regions.

Dunbar (6-1) placed first for the fifth time, Russell (4-2) placed second, DuPont Manual (4-2) placed third, and Western Hills (4-2) placed fourth.

The quick recall Eagles, the defending tournament champions, went 1-2 in the tournament and brought their overall record to 24-9. This the thirteenth time Apollo has placed 9th or better in sixteen Hart County Tournament appearances. A.J. Estes led the team in scoring, followed by Elizabeth Rogers, Michael Boone, Katrina Boone, Ian Wilkey, Emily Pearl and Travis McMaine.

Match results were: Round 1 - defeated Eastern B 29-28. Round 2 - lost to Daviess County 50-20. Round 3 - lost to Eastern A 42-28.

Pennyrile Meet #4

The AHS academic team hosted Pennyrile Academic Association meet #4 Nov. 10.

The varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Breckinridge County 32-20 and Hopkins County Central 33-8, improving their Pennyrile record to 8-0 and their overall record to 26-9. Michael Boone led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match, followed by Katrina Boone, A.J. Estes and Bart Swift.

The junior varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Breckinridge County 30-5 and Hopkins County Central 28-1, improving their Pennyrile record to 8-0. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 13 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey and Travis McMaine.

Language Arts - 4th, Carrie Gentry; 5th, Natalie Johnson; 6th, Meghan Van Bussum; 7th, Samantha Foster. Social Studies - 1st, Thomas Cameron; 3rd, Seth Bodnar; tied for 6th, Joseph Early and Tristan Hoover. Science - 1st, Drew Burden; tied for 4th, Roel Flores and Derek Morgan; 9th, Branden Payton. Math- tied for 1st, Ian Wilkey and Ryan Seabolt; 3rd, Wei Ji; 4th, Bailey Davis.

FCAT Competition

The Apollo academic team placed 3rd in both portions of the 5th Annual Ford Center Academic Team Competition (FCAT) at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History's Wendell H. Ford Government Education Center Nov. 15. The FCAT consisted of a social studies written assessment test and a double-elimination quick recall tournament.

AHS placings in the social studies test competition were: 3rd, Bart Swift; 6th, A.J. Estes; 8th, Tyler Sagardoy; 10th, Michael Boone; 11th, Elizabeth Rogers; 13th, Eric Vanover; tied for 14th, Thomas Cameron and Tristan Hoover.

In the quick recall tournament, three-time defending champion Apollo went 1-2 and placed 3rd. Bart Swift led the team in scoring, followed by A.J. Estes, Tyler Sagardoy, Michael Boone, Elizabeth Rogers, Thomas Cameron and Tristan Hoover. Match results were: Round 1 - lost to Daviess County 33-19. Round 2 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 32-16; Round 3 - lost to Daviess County 32-18.

Pennyrile Meet #5

The Apollo academic team competd in Pennyrile Academic Association meet #5 at Christian County High School Nov. 17.

The varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Christian County 35-5 and Hopkinsville 34-12, finishing the PAA season with a perfect 10-0 record and improving their overall record to 28-9. In the process, they won their ninth Pennyrile varsity quick recall championship, including the last five straight, and went undefeated for the seventh time in 15 seasons. Michael Boone led the team in scoring with 10 tossups per match, followed by A.J. Estes, Tyler Sagardoy, Bart Swift and Landon Basham.

The junior varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Christian County 27-5 and Hopkinsville 1-0 by forfeit, finishing the PAA season with a perfect 10-0 record. In the process, they won their fifth Pennyrile JV quick recall championship and went undefeated for the fifth time in 14 seasons. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 13 tossups, followed by Ian Wilkey, Thomas Cameron, Rory Brown and Roel Flores.

Varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities - 1st, Ashley McMichael; 3rd, Rebecca Doom; tied for 4th, Sheriese Bone and Rachel Gentry. Language Arts - 1st, A.J. Estes; 3rd, Elaina Reid; tied for 4th, Emily Pearl and Daniel Tilford. Social Studies - 1st, Bart Swift; 2nd, Tyler Sagardoy; 3rd, Britt Lacefield; 5th, Eric Vanover. Science - 1st, Michael Boone; 2nd, Brandon Reynolds; 3rd, Diedre Gentry; 4th, Matthew Ficker. Math - 1st, Landon Basham; 3rd, Eric Perkins; 5th, Paris Kidd; 7th, Tim Hicks.

Junior varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities - 1st, Elizabeth Rogers; 2nd, Ashley Boswell; 3rd, Delana Hill; 4th, Jamie Sosh. Language Arts - 1st,; Meghan Van Bussum; 2nd, Natalie Johnson; 4th, Carrie Gentry; 5th, Rory Brown. Social Studies - 2nd, Thomas Cameron; tied for 3rd, Joseph Early and Tristan Hoover; 7th, Seth Bodnar. Science - tied for 1st, Drew Burden and Branden Payton; tied for 3rd, Travis McMaine and Derek Morgan. Math - 1st, Ian Wilkey; 2nd, Ryan Seabolt; tied for 4th, Roel Flores and Wei Ji.

Student Loan People JV Challenge

The AHS junior varsity academic team placed 2nd overall in the 4th Annual Section 2 Student Loan People JV Challenge,at Muhlenberg North High School on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Student Loan People JV Challenge is a competition in quick recall and written assessment designed to give an additional competition opportunity for Kentucky's 9th and 10th grade students.

Team standings and scores were: 1st, Daviess County, 45; 2nd, Apollo, 42; 3rd, Madisonville-North Hopkins, 37; 4th, Owensboro, 22.5 points; 5th, Muhlenberg South, 3; 6th, Muhlenberg North, 0.5; 7th, Dawson Springs, 0. The top three teams were awarded plaques.

In the double-elimination quick recall competition, Apollo went 3-1, outscored their opponents 125-91, brought their overall record to 13-1, and placed 1st for the third time in four years. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 12 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Thomas Cameron, Travis McMaine and Tristan Hoover. Match results were: Round 1 - defeated Madisonville-North Hopkins 32-26. Round 2 - defeated Owensboro 34-12. Round 3 - lost to Daviess County 32-26. Championship Match - defeated Daviess County 33-21.

In the written assessment competition, the top six students in each subject area were awarded medals and earned points. Written assessment results for the AHS JV Team were: Arts and Humanities - 1st, Elizabeth Rogers; 9th, Andrea Stone; 14th, Ashley Boswell. Language Arts - 5th, Carrie Gentry; 6th, Natalie Johnson; 13th, Samantha Foster. Social Studies - 1st, Elizabeth Rogers; 8th, Thomas Cameron; 15th, Tristan Hoover. Science - 5th, Travis McMaine; 8th, Branden Payton; 11th, Derek Morgan. Mathematics - 1st, Ian Wilkey; 5th, Ryan Seabolt; 10th, Wei Ji.

Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl

The AHS quick recall team had a Cinderella day in the 16th annual Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl at Brookwood H.S. in Snellville, Georgia, Nov. 22. After going 4-2 in the prelims and earning the #40 seed, the team was not to be denied and went 3-1 in the playoffs, defeating the #25, #8 and #9 seeds, losing only to the #1 seed and placing 5th. The tournament featured 120 teams from 75 schools from 8 states, making it the largest academic quiz bowl in the nation hosted by one high school. Each team played six preliminary matches, with the top 64 advancing to a single-elimination playoff.

The Eagles went 7-3 in the tournament, brought their season record to 35-12, outscored their opponents 2,280 to 1,905 and placed 5th as the #40 seed. A.J. Estes (70 tossups), Michael Boone (68 tossups) and Bart Swift (62 tossups) led a balanced scoring attack, followed by Landon Basham and Tyler Sagardoy.

Dorman H.S. of Spartanburg, S.C. won the tournament for the sixth time by defeating Lexington's Dunbar 300-175 in the championship match. Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) I of Montgomery, Ala. placed third and Central I of Macon, Ga. was fourth.

Preliminary match results were: Round 1 - lost to Paideia School of Atlanta, Ga., 205-180. Round 2 - defeated Woodstock (Ga.) I, 220-190. Round 3 - defeated Dunbar IV, 285-110.Round 4 - defeated Chattahoochee III, 265-150. Round 5 - lost to North Atlanta I,, 265-210. Round 6 - defeated Atlanta North Springs, 260-175. Playoff match results were: Round of 64 - #40 seed Apollo defeated #25 seed Pensacola, 245-225 in "sudden death" overtime. Round of 32 - defeated #8 seed Chattahoochee I, 270-190. Round of 16 - defeated #9 seed Ezell-Harding Christian School I of Antioch, Tenn., 215-185. Quarterfinals - lost to #1 seed LAMP I, 210-130.

After the tournament, the team went to nearby Stone Mountain Park where they viewed the Confederate Memorial carving and rode the skylift to the top of Stone Mountain, from which they viewed the Atlanta skyline and the surrounding Georgia countryside. .
