2003-2004 PAA Final Standings
The Apollo academic team once again placed at the top in
the overall final standings for the 5-meet season of the
15-school Pennyrile Academic Association.
The varsity quick recall team placed 1st with a 10-0 record,
Apollo's 9th championship, including the last 5 straight,
7th undefeated season and 15th top-3 placing in 16 years
of PAA varsity quick recall. They have compiled an overall
record of 158-17. The junior varsity quick recall team placed
1st with a 10-0 record, Apollo's 5th championship, 5th undefeated
season and 12th top-4 placing in 14 years of PAA JV quick
recall. They have compiled an overall record of 125-30.
In written assessment, AHS earned 1 of the 11 first-place
overall plaques, second highest in the PAA. We earned 9 of
the 51 plaques for placing in the top 5 overall, second highest
in the PAA. We placed 15 team members in the top 10 overall,
second highest in the PAA. We placed 32 team members in the
top 20 overall, 9 more than any other PAA school. The overall
standings were determined by the total of the students' top
3 scores.

Fall 2003 KMO
Two teams of Apollo academic team members competed in the
Fall 2003 Knowledge Master Open Dec. 1 & 2. Student academic
teams including 27,660 students from 48 states, the District
of Columbia and 6 foreign countries competed in the 200-question
contest at their own schools, testing their knowledge in
all areas of the curriculum, using specially programmed computer
disks. Scores were based on speed and accuracy, with a perect
score of 2,000 possible, if all 200 questions were answered
correctly within 7 seconds!
In the junior high division, there were 147 schools competing.
The top score was 1,695 and the mean score was 1,292. The
Apollo High School ninth-grade team scored 1,344 points,
placing third in the state and 72nd (top 49%) overall internationally.The
AHS ninth-grade team included Seth Bodnar, Rory Brown, Thomas
Cameron, Bailey Davis, Jeremy Early, Joseph Early, Roel Flores,
Samantha Foster, Hannah Harpe, Wei Ji, Rob Milburn, Jamie
Sosh, Andrew Stelmach and Adam Witt.
In the high school division, there were 872 teams competing.
The top score was 1,814 and the mean score was 1,218. The
Apollo High School team scored 1,446 points, placing third
in the state and 119th (top 14%) overall internationally.
The AHS team included Landon Basham, Michael Boone, Caroline
Buchanan, A.J. Estes, Derek Holder, Travis McMaine, Derek
Morgan, Branden Payton, Emily Pearl, Elizabeth Rogers, Tyler
Sagardoy, Ryan Seabolt, Andrea Stone, Daniel Tilford and
Ian Wilkey.
ASMA Contest #3
Eighty-one Apollo math students participated in the American
Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #3 Dec. 9. The
contest involved solving seven math problems. Landon Basham,
Michael Boone, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey were the top scorers
with scores of 5. They were followed by: tied for 5th, Tyler
Blythe, Brence Brooks, Jill Carter, T.J. Daugherty, Derek
Holder, Mitchell Jones, Ryan Lilly and Travis McMaine.
2003 PAA Quick Recall Tournament
The Apollo quick recall team placed second in the 2003 Pennyrile
Academic Association Quick Recall Tournament at Owensboro
Community College Dec. 20. The tournament featured 10 of
the 15 PAA teams. Each team played five preliminary matches,
with the top eight advancing to a single-elimination playoff,
based on win-loss records and total points.
The Eagles (7-1), undefeated (10-0) 2003 PAA regular season
co-champions and four-time defending PAA tournament champions,
placed second as the No. 2 seed. They outscored their opponents
211-146 and improved their season record to 42-13. Our teams
had won 40 straight PAA tournament matches dating back to
the 1998 consolation match, prior to losing to No. 1 seed
Daviess County (8-0) in the championship match. Owensboro
(4-4), the No. 4 seed, placed third and Madisonville-North
Hopkins (5-3), the No. 3 seed, placed fourth.
Apollo teams have advanced to the PAA tournament playoffs
all ten years. They have made the semifinals eight times,
the finals six times and have never placed worse than sixth.
AHS teams have an average finish of 2.6 and an overall record
of 63-13.
Preliminary match results were: Round 1 - defeated Owensboro
Catholic 31-20. Round 2 - defeated Grayson County 27-19.
Round 3 - defeated Muhlenberg South 23-19. Round 4 - defeated
Hopkins County Central 34-9. Round 5 - defeated Breckinridge
County 28-15. Playoff match results were: Quarterfinals - defeated
Grayson County 21-18. Semifinals - defeated Madisonville-North
Hopkins 24-19. Championship - lost to Daviess County 27-23.
Michael Boone led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per
match, follwed by A.J. Estes, Tyler Sagardoy, Bart Swift,
Elizabeth Rogers, Emily Pearl and Ian Wilkey. Michael Boone
and A.J. Estes made the all-tournament team.
ASMA Contest #4
Sixty-eight Apollo math students participated in the American
Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #4 Jan. 7. The
contest involved solving seven math problems. Travis McMaine,
Tyler Sagardoy and Ian Wilkey were the top scorers with scores
of 5. They were followed by: tied for 4th, Landon Basham,
Mitchell Jones, Grace Oh, Eric Perkins, and Ryan Seabolt;
tied for 9th, Michael Boone, Britt Lacefield, Brittany Leach,
Grant Todd and Jordan Whitehead.
NCEL Meet #2
On Jan. 8, four hundred, twenty-one AHS students took part
in the National Current Events League Meet #2. The meet consisted
of 30-question, multiple choice tests covering current events
from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31.
Grade 9 (284 participants)-1st, Chris Bartlett with a score
of 28; tied for 2nd, Thomas Cameron and Jamie Sosh; tied
for 4th, Nathan Burns, Roel Flores, Paige Prater and Alex
Whitehead; tied for 8th, Adam Beitler, Joseph Coker, Joseph
Early, Tyler Logsdon and Morgan Sumner; tied for 13th, Seth
Bodnar, Nick Hobbs and Jonathan Keiser; tied for 16th, Ryan
Carrico, Stephanie Cline, Sara Ford, Jordan Head, Tony Kirby,
Paul Krampe, Aaron Layson, Adam Sacra, Brandon Spraggs, Jeremy
Taylor and Dillon Vanover.
Grade 10-12 (137 participants)-1st, Dayved Bell with a score
of 27; tied for 2nd, Michael Boone, A.J. Estes and Shane
Sikes; tied for 5th, Drew Burden, Will Pierce, Brandon Reynolds
and Daniel Tilford; tied for 9th, Lee Blanton, Clayton Carden,
Jacob Patterson, Elizabeth Rogers, Tyler Sagardoy and Ian
Wilkey; tied for 15th, Aaron Burns, Travis McMaine, Emily
Pearl and Eric Pinkston; tied for 19th, Tim Hicks, Brett
Maneth, Andrea Stone and Steven Wilbanks.
Fleming County Academic Tournament
Two Apollo High School quick recall teams participated in
the Fourth Annual Fleming County Academic Tournament Jan.
10 in Flemingsburg. The tournament featured six A teams and
five B teams from six schools. Each division played a round-robin,
with the A teams advancing to a four-team, single-elimination
playoff.
Russell (6-1), the No. 2 seed, won the A-team division by
defeating Campbell County (6-1), the No. 1 seed, 35-23 in
the championship match. Apollo (3-3), the No. 3 seed, placed
third and Fleming County (2-4), the No. 4 seed, placed fourth.
Mason County (1-4) placed fifth and Menifee County (0-5)
placed sixth. Apollo A went 3-3 in the tournament, outscored
their opponents 175-145 and brought their overall record
to 46-18. Michael Boone led the team in scoring with 7 tossups
per match, followed by A.J. Estes, Bart Swift and Tyler Sagardoy.
Match results for Apollo A were: Round 1 - lost to Russell
41-22. Round 2 - lost to Campbell County 32-24. Round 3 - defeated
Menifee County 43-9. Round 4 - defeated Mason County 43-6.
Round 5 - defeated Fleming County 25-21. Semifinals - lost
to Russell 36-18.
Russell (4-0) won the B-team division, Apollo (2-2) placed
second, Campbell County (2-2) placed third, Fleming County
(2-2) placed fourth and Menifee County (0-4) placed fifth.
Apollo B went 2-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents
106-77 and brought their overall record to 10-10. Elizabeth
Rogers led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match,
followed by Ian Wilkey, Travis McMaine, Daniel Tilford, Branden
Payton and Derek Morgan. Match results for Apollo B were:
Round 1 - lost to Campbell County 33-18. Round 2 - lost to
Russell 26-22. Round 3 - defeated Fleming County 28-15. Round
4 - defeated Menifee County 38-3.
"Academic Challenge"
The Apollo quick recall team placed second in this year's "Academic
Challenge" series. The taping of the program for 2003-2004
season took place on Jan. 6, 13 and 20 at the Owensboro High
School TV studio. Dr. Ellen Dugan-Barrette, professor of
English at Brescia University, served as moderator and host
of the program for the ninth straight year. The show, featuring
the quick recall teams of Apollo High School, Daviess County
High School, Owensboro High School and Owensboro Catholic
High School, is televised on Adelphia Cable OPS Channel 53
and DCPS Channel 54.
Senior captain A.J. Estes, who averaged 8 questions per
match in the series, led the team in scoring, followed by
Michael Boone, Bart Swift, Elizabeth Rogers and Tyler Sagardoy.
The team improved its overall record to 49-21. AHS results
in the three tapings were: Jan. 6: Match 1 - lost to Daviess
County 280-110. Match 2 - lost to Owensboro 295-260. Match
3 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 250-115. Jan. 13: Match 1
- lost to Owensboro 225-220. Match 2 - lost to Daviess County
375-190. Match 3 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 255-225. Jan.
20: Match 1 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 370-180. Match
2 - defeated Daviess County 260-255 in overtime. Match 3
- lost to Owensboro 254-165.
Daviess County (7-2) placed first in the series for the
sixth time in the 20-year run of the program. The Panthers
have won three outright championships and three co-championships
and have a total of six firsts, six seconds, six thirds and
two fourths and an all-time series record of 88-76. Apollo
(4-5) placed second in the series for the fourth time. Apollo
has won 12 outright championships and three co-championships
and has a total of 15 firsts, four seconds and one third
and an all-time series record of 125-39. Owensboro (4-5)
tied for second place. The Red Devils have won two outright
championships and have a total of two firsts, six seconds,
eight thirds and four fourths and an all-time series record
of 77-87. Owensboro Catholic (3-6) placed fourth. The Aces
have a total of four seconds, five thirds and 11 fourths
and an all-time series record of 38-126.
