Apollo 9th Grade Academic Tournament
The Apollo freshman academic team placed 5th in both written
assessment and quick recall in the 12th Annual Apollo High
School 9th Grade Academic Tournament Jan. 24.
The written assessment competition consisted of up to three
students from each school taking 50-question, multiple-choice
tests in six subject areas, with the top two scores being
totaled to determine the team score. Medals were awarded
to the top three students in each subject area and trophies
were awarded to the top four teams.
Madisonville-North Hopkins (487) won the written assessment
competition, becoming the first non-Daviess County Public
Schools team to do so. Owensboro Catholic (453) placed second,
Breckinridge County (448) placed third, five-time winner
Daviess County (436) placed fourth, six-time winner Apollo
(425) placed fifth, Owensboro (361) placed sixth and Franklin-Simpson
(256) placed seventh.
AHS team members placing in the top 10 in the individual
subject areas were:
Arts and Humanities - 10th, Rory Brown. Language Arts - 5th,
Bailey Davis; tied for 10th, Wei Ji and Rob Milburn. Social
Studies - 7th, Thomas Cameron; 10th, Seth Bodnar. Science - 9th,
Roel Flores. Mathematics - 5th, Wei Ji; 7th, Rob Milburn;
9th, Adam Witt. Spelling - 10th, Hannah Harpe. Others taking
tests were: Arts and Humanities - Jeremy Early, Joseph Early.
Social Studies - Tristan Hoover. Science - Samantha Foster,
Thomas Cameron. Spelling - Joseph Early, Roel Flores.
In the round-robin quick recall competition, each of the
seven teams played the six other teams, with the placings
being determined by win-loss records. Trophies were awarded
to the top four teams. Results were: 1st, Madisonville-North
Hopkins (6-0); 2nd, Owensboro Catholic (5-1); 3rd, 2000 champion
Breckinridge County (3-3); 4th, 1998 and 2002 champion Daviess
County (3-3); 5th,1997 and 1999 champion Apollo (2-4); 6th,
Franklin-Simpson (1-5); 7th, Owensboro (1-5).
Thomas Cameron led the team in scoring with 5 tossups per
match and made the all-tournament team. He was followed by
Roel Flores, Rory Brown, Rob Milburn, Seth Bodnar, Bailey
Davis, Joseph Early, Tristan Hoover, Jeremy Early, Hannah
Harpe and Adam Witt. Match results were: Round 1 - lost to
Breckinridge County 33-19. Round 2 - lost to Daviess County
37-18. Round 3 - defeated Franklin-Simpson 24-23. Round 4 - lost
to Owensboro Catholic 38-13. Round 5 -lost to Madisonville-North
Hopkins 29-15. Round 6 - defeated Owensboro 27-23.
Brescia University Academic Competition
The Apollo quick recall A team placed 1st and AHS writers
place 1st and 3rd in the2004 Brescia University Academic
Competition Jan. 31. The competition consisted of contests
in English composition and quick recall.
In the English composition portion of the competition, students
were given a prompt and allowed 90 minutes in which to write
their compositions. Elaina Reid placed 1st and Rachel Gentry
placed 3rd. They were awarded medals for their achievement
and are eligible for $2,500 Brescia University Writing Scholarships.
Ashley Boswell placed fifth, Caroline Buchanan placed sixth,
Carrie Gentry placed seventh and Andrea Stone placed eighth.
The quick recall portion of the competition featured 10
teams from 5 high schools. The teams were randomly placed
in pools, with each team playing three or four preliminary
matches. Preliminary match point results were used to seed
the teams for a single-elimination playoff.
Apollo A (6-0), the No. 1 seed, won the tournament for the
sixth time, including four of the last six, by defeating
No. 2 seed Madisonville-North Hopkins A (6-1) 20-18 in the
championship match. Apollo continued a streak of 13 straight
Brescia tournaments in which AHS teams have placed third
or better and have compiled a 13-year record of 65-10. The
Eagles outscored their opponents 174 to 81 and improved their
overall season record to 55-21. Michael Boone led the team
in scoring with 6 tossups per match, followed by A.J. Estes,
Bart Swift and Tyler Sagardoy. Members of the first-place
team were awarded a trophy and medals and are eligible for
$2,500 Brescia University Scholarships. Owensboro A (6-1),
the No. 3 seed, placed 3rd and No. 8 seed Madisonville-North
Hopkins B (2-5) placed 4th. No. 4 seed Apollo B (2-3) placed
sixth. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 7 tossups
per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Landon Basham, Caroline
Buchanan and Daniel Tilford. No. 10 seed Apollo C (0-4) placed
10th. Thomas Cameron and Roel Flores led the team in scoring,
followed by Branden Payton, Ryan Seabolt, Rory Brown and
Derek Morgan
Preliminary match results were: Round 1 - Apollo B defeated
Madisonville-North Hopkins B 21-14; Apollo C lost to Owensboro
Catholic B 12-6. Round 2 - Apollo A defeated Daviess County
49-9; Apollo B defeated Owensboro Catholic A 26-20; Apollo
C lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins A 34-8. Round 3 - Apollo
A defeated Owensboro B 24-19; Apollo B lost to Owensboro
A 22-21. Round 4 - Apollo A defeated Owensboro Catholic A
20-14; Apollo B lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins A 34-10;
Apollo C lost to Daviess County 16-13.
Playoff match results were: Round 1 - Apollo C lost to Daviess
County 13-7.
Quarterfinals - Apollo A defeated Owensboro Catholic A 29-12;
Apollo B lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins B 24-19. Semifinals - Apollo
A defeated Madisonville-North Hopkins B 32-9. Championship - Apollo
A defeated Madisonville-North Hopkins A 20-18.
ASMA Contest #5
Seventy-four Apollo math students participated in the American
Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #5 Feb. 12. The
contest involved solving seven math problems. Ian Wilkey
was the top scorer with a score of 6. He was followed by:
tied for 2nd, Landon Basham, Michael Boone and Ryan Seabolt;
5th, Travis McMaine; tied for 6th, Tyler Blythe, Chris Conkright,
Zach Greer, Britt Lacefield, Jerry Leftwich, Crystal Marsh,
Grace Oh, Elizabeth Rogers, and Stephanie Schmitt.
KAAC 10th District Governor's Cup
The Apollo academic team placed 2nd overall in the KAAC
10th District Governor's Cup Competition held Jan. 22 and
Feb. 14 at Owensboro Catholic High School. Team standings
were: 1st, Daviess County, 57 points; 2nd, Apollo, 36 points;
3rd, Owensboro, 16 points; 4th, Owensboro Catholic, 15 points.
This is the 17th straight time that AHS teams have placed
1st (10 times) or 2nd (7 times) in the district in overall
points!
Team members advancing to the regional by placing in the
top two in team events or in the top five in individual written
categories were:
Quick Recall, 2nd Place Team - Bart Swift led the team in
scoring with 7 tossups per match, followed by Michael Boone,
A.J. Estes, Elizabeth Rogers, Landon Basham, Tyler Sagardoy,
Ian Wilkey and Daniel Tilford. The team went 2-2 and brought
their overall record to 57-23. Match results were: Round
1 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 50-34. Round 2 - lost to
Daviess County 50-30. Round 3 - defeated Owensboro Catholic
47-33. Championship Match - lost to Daviess County 47-33.
This is the 17th time AHS quick recall teams have advanced
to the regional in 19 years!
Future Problem Solving, 2nd Place Team - Michael Boone,
Caroline Buchanan, Ed Cureton, Delana Hill, Samantha Foster
and Andrew Stelmach. This is the 16th time Apollo FPS teams
have advanced to the regional!
