KAAC 3rd Region Governor's Cup

The Apollo academic team placed 2nd overall in the KAAC 3rd Region Governor's Cup Competition held Feb. 26 and 28 at Owensboro High School. Team standings and points were: 1st, Daviess County, 39.5; 2nd, Apollo, 23; 3rd, Breckinridge County, 19; 4th, Owensboro, 12; 5th, Hancock County, 10; 6th, Owensboro Catholic, 7.5; 7th, Meade County, 7; 8th, Edmonson County, 3; 9th, McLean County, 2; 10th, Ohio County, 1. This is the 15th time that AHS teams have placed 1st (9 times) or 2nd (6 times) in the region in overall points!

Team members advancing to the state finals by placing in the top two in team events or in the top five in individual written categories were:

Quick Recall, 2nd Place Team - Michael Boone led the team in scoring with 10 tossups per match, followed by A.J. Estes, Bart Swift, Landon Basham, Tyler Sagardoy, Elizabeth Rogers, Ian Wilkey and Daniel Tilford. The team went 3-2 and brought their overall record to 60-25. Match results were: Round 1 - defeated Edmonson County 51-19. Round 2 - defeated Breckinridge County 38-28. Round 3 - lost to Daviess County 55-22. Round 4 - defeated Breckinridge County 50-27. Championship Match - lost to Daviess County 56-29. This is the 14th time AHS quick recall teams have advanced to the state finals in 19 years!

NCEL Meet #3

On March 4, four hundred, seventeen AHS students took part in the National Current Events League Meet #3. The meet consisted of 30-question, multiple choice tests covering current events from Jan. 1 to Feb. 29.

Grade 9 (280 participants)-1st, Alex Whitehead with a score of 26; tied for 2nd, Nathan Burns, Tyler Logsdon, Rob Milburn and Alex Vanover; tied for 6th, Joseph Coker, Matt Damin and Sam Foster; tied for 9th, Travis Case, Nick Goss, Brittney Hidenrite, Paul Krampe and Harrison Taylor; tied for 14th, Tyler Austin, Michael Bellwood, Seth Bodnar, Cody Coomes and Jamie Sosh.

Grade 10-12 (137 participants)-1st, Bart Swift with a perfect score of 30; tied for 2nd, Michael Boone, and Tyler Sagardoy; 4th, A.J. Estes; 5th, Shane Sikes; tied for 6th, Jacob Patterson, Brandon Reynolds and Daniel Tilford; tied for 9th, Clayton Carden, Brett Maneth, Elizabeth Rogers and Andrea Stone; tied for 13th, Drew Burden and Derrick Patterson; tied for 15th, Jordan Gray and Steven Wilbanks; tied for 17th, Will Pierce, Jessie Roby, Derek Schwartz, Sam Warren and Ian Wilkey.

Kentucky Science Olympiad Regional

The Apollo science team, three-time KSO regional champions, placed third in the 13th Annual Kentucky Science Olympiad Western Regional at Madisonville Community College on March 6 and qualified for the state finals for the ninth time. Reidland , coached by former Apollo teacher Christina Thompson Thurston, won the regional for the first time and qualified for the state finals for the third time. Nine-time regional champion Hopkinsville placed second and qualified for the state finals for the 13th time. The top three teams advance to the Kentucky Science Olympiad State Finals at Western Kentucky University on April 24.

The competition involved high school teams competing in 22 events. The challenging and motivating events were well balanced among the various scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science and technology. Apollo earned medals in 17 events (4 firsts, 5 seconds, 8 thirds).

AHS team members earning medals for placing in the top three in their events were: first place, "Designer Genes," Eric Perkins and Tyler Sagardoy; first place, "Fossils," A.J. Estes and Bart Swift; first place, "Physics Lab," Michael Boone and Emily Pearl; first place, "Remote Sensing," Drew Burden and Tim Hicks; second place, "Astronomy," Will Pierce and Brandon Reynolds; second place, "Disease Detectives," Drew Burden and Tyler Sagardoy; second place, "Practical Data Gathering," Michael Boone and Will Pierce; second place, "Science of Fitness," A.J. Estes and Tyler Sagardoy; second place, "Write It, Do It," Michael Boone and A.J. Estes; third place, "Cell Biology," Eric Perkins and Bart Swift; third place, "Chemistry Lab," Derek Morgan and Branden Payton; third place, "Forestry," Tim Hicks and Elizabeth Rogers; third place, "Mission Possible," Emily Pearl; third place, "Qualitative Analysis," Travis McMaine and Ian Wilkey; third place, "Sounds of Music," Tim Hicks and Brandon Reynolds; third place, "Tower Building," Drew Burden and Branden Payton; third place, "Wright Stuff," Will Pierce and Elizabeth Rogers.

ASMA Contest #6

Sixty-one Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #6 March 11. The contest involved solving seven math problems. Ian Wilkey was the top scorer with a perfect score of 7. He was followed by: 2nd, Landon Basham; tied for 3rd, Michael Boone, Travis McMaineand Elizabeth Rogers; tied for 6th, Mitchell Jones, Nathan McDivitt, Ryan Seabolt and Charity Young; tied for 10th, Katrina Boone, Caroline Buchanan, Chris Conkright, Angela Davidson, Jerry Leftwich, Eric Perkins and Tyler Sagardoy.

Apollo's top scorers for the six-contest American Scholastic Mathematics Association 2003-2004 season were: 1st, Ian Wilkey; 2nd, Landon Basham; 3rd, Ryan Seabolt; 4th, Michael Boone; 5th, Travis McMaine; 6th, Eric Perkins; 7th, Tyler Sagardoy; 8th, Mitchell Jones; 9th, Britt Lacefield; tied for 10th, Katrina Boone, T.J. Daugherty, Elizabeth Rogers and Robert Skaggs.

KAAC Governor's Cup State Finals

The Apollo academic team competed in the 19th Annual KAAC Governor's Cup State Finals held at the Galt House in Louisville March 14-15.

Results for AHS team members in written assessment in which 80+ students competed in each subject area were: Arts and Humanities - 11th, Elizabeth Rogers. Language Arts - 21st, A.J. Estes. Social Studies - 51st, Bart Swift. Science - 42nd, Michael Boone. Mathematics - 14th, Landon Basham; 21st, Ryan Seabolt; 47th, Ian Wilkey.

The Apollo quick recall team went 1-1, brought their overall record to 61-26 and placed 9th. This is the 10th time AHS quick recall teams have placed 9th or better in the state finals. Michael Boone led the team in scoring with 10 tossups per match, followed by Elizabeth Rogers, Tyler Sagardoy, A.J. Estes, Bart Swift and Landon Basham. Match results were: Round of 32 - defeated Bardstown 48-18. Round of 16 - lost to DuPont Manual 57-20.

U of E High School Programming Contest

Two Apollo computer programming teams were among 14 teams from 9 high schools from Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky participating in the 13th Annual University of Evansville High School Programming Contest on March 20. In the contest, teams were given 2 1/2 hours in which to solve six programming problems.

Apollo team B - Michael Brothers, Bryan Hopper, Chris Martin and Matthew Thompson solved four problems and placed 7th. Apollo team A - Michael Boone, Brandon Reynolds and Ian Wilkey solved four problems and placed 9th.

Park Tudor School of Indianapolis, Ind. placed 1st, Daviess County High School placed 2nd and Signature School of Evansville, Ind. placed 3rd. All three teams solved six problems.
