Pikeville High School Spring Invitational
The Apollo junior varsity quick recall team placed 5th in
the Pikeville High School Spring Invitational Junior Varsity
Quick Recall Tournament in Pikeville, Kentucky on March 27.
The tournament featured 12 teams form 10 Kentucky schools.
In the tournament, teams were divided into two six-team
pools and each team played five preliminary matches. Preliminary
match results were used to seed the teams for a single-elimination
playoff based on win-loss record and total points.
Johnson Central A (8-0), the #2 seed, won the tournament
by defeating #1 seed Dunbar (7-1) 39-34 in the championship
match. Daviess County (6-2), the #3 seed, placed 3rd and
Paintsville (5-4), the #5 seed, placed 4th.
Apollo went 4-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents
221-144, and brought their season record to 17-3. They went
4-1 in the preliminaries and advanced to the playoffs as
the #4 seed. They went 0-1 in the playoffs and placed 5th.
Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 9 tossups per
match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Thomas Cameron, Ryan Seabolt,
Travis McMaine and Branden Payton.
Preliminary match results were: Round 1 – lost to
Johnson Central A, 37-31. Round 2 – defeated Paintsville,
35-33. Round 3 – defeated Estill County, 42-15. Round
4 – defeated Piarist – 36-22. Round 5 – defeated
Pike Central B – 48-7.
Playoff match results were: Round 1 – Bye. Quarterfinals – lost
to Paintsville, 30-29.
WKU Computer Problem Solving Contest
Four teams of AHS computer programming students were among
21 teams from 4 schools competing in the Western Kentucky
University Computer Problem Solving Contest in Bowling Green
on April 14. In the contest, teams were given 2 ½ hours
to solve five programming problems. Teams placing in the
top three were awarded ribbons and a trophy and the members
of the winning team were awarded $1,000 WKU scholarships.
AHS team 1 (4 solved) – Michael Boone, Brandon Reynolds
and Ian Wilkey placed 2nd. This is the sixth time Apollo
teams have placed 2nd or better in the WKU contest, including
1st in 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2002 and 2nd in 1998. AHS team
2 (3 solved) –Bryan Hopper, Chris Martin and Matt Thompson
placed 4th. AHS team 3 (1 solved) – Michael Brothers,
Logan Grimsley and Kevin Reel placed 17th. AHS team 4 (0
solved) – Matt Henry, Barry Mordukhaev and Nathan Wade
placed 18th.
Bowling Green team 3 (4 solved) placed 1st, Bowling Green
team 2 (4 solved) placed 3rd and Daviess County team 2 (3
solved) placed 5th.
Vanderbilt ABC #27
The Apollo junior varsity quick recall A team placed 4th
and the varsity quick recall team placed 10th in the Vanderbilt
University Academic Bowl Contest XXVII in Nashville, Tennessee
on April 17. The tournament featured 18 JV teams from 4 states
and and 24 varsity teams from 6 states.
In the tournament, teams were divided into five or six team
pools, with each team playing five or six preliminary matches.
The results of the first set of pool matches were used to
divide the teams into new pools and each team played five
additional matches. Only the teams in the top division were
eligible to play for the championship.
Brookwood (8-2) of Snellville, Ga. won their third Vandy
ABC varsity tournament by defeating Detroit Country Day (7-3)
of Beverly Hills, Mich., 270-190 in a tie-breaking championship
playoff. Ezell-Harding Christian School (6-3) of Antioch,
Tenn. placed 3rd and Cutter Morning Star (6-3) of Hot Springs,
Ark. placed 4th.
Detroit Catholic Central (10-0) of Redford, Michigan won
the first Vandy ABC JV. tournament. Madisonville-North Hopkins
(Ky.) A (8-3) placed 2nd by defeating Russell (Ky.) (8-3),
120-110 in a tie-breaking playoff and Apollo A (6-4) placed
4th.
The AHS varsity team went 5-4 in the tournament, outscored
their opponents 2,165 to 1,615, and brought their overall
record to 66-30. This is the 16th time AHS vrasity teams
have placed 10th or better in Vandy ABC’s. A.J. Estes
led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match and placed
8th overall in individual scoring out of 121 participants.
He was followed by Tyler Sagardoy, Michael Boone, Landon
Basham and Daniel Tilford.
The AHS JV team A went 6-4 in the tournament, outscored
their opponents 1,720 to 1,535, and brought their overall
record to 23-7. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring
with 10 tossups per match and placed 3rd overall in individual
scoring out of 84 participants. She was followed by Ian Wilkey,
Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Branden Payton and Ryan Seabolt.
The AHS JV team B went 0-8-1 in the tournament and placed
17th. Tristan Hoover led the team in scoring, followed by
Adam Witt, Seth Bodnar, Rob Milburn, Joseph Early and Jeremy
Early.
AHS varsity match results were: Round 1 – bye. Round
2 - defeated Hillsboro of Nashville, Tenn., 385-95. Round
3 – defeated Woodford County of Versailles, Ky., 215-110.
Round 4 – defeated Columbia (Tenn.) Central, 270-30.
Round 5 – lost to Russellville (Ala.), 305-160. Round
6 – lost to Aiken (S.C.) – 240-190. Round 7 – lost
to Irmo of Columbia, S.C., 295-200. Round 8 – defeated
Daviess County A, 330-160. Round 9 – lost to Campbell
County of Alexandria, Ky., 260-210. Round 10 – defeated
Madisonville-North Hopkins, 205-120.
AHS JV team A match results were: Round 1 – defeated
Woodford County, 295-170. Round 2 – defeated Seneca
of Louisville, Ky., 190-170. Round 3 – lost to Russell,
125-90. Round 4 – defeated Madisonville-North Hopkins
B, 160-115. Round 5 – defeated DuPont Manual C of Louisville,
Ky., 180-10. Round 6 – lost to Detroit Catholic Central,
280-160. Round 7 – lost to Russell, 220-175. Round
8 – defeated Daviess County, 215-150. Round 9 – defeated
DuPont Manual A, 195-150. Round 10 – lost to Madisonville-North
