Spring 2004 KMO
Two teams of Apollo academic team members competed in the Spring 2004 Knowledge Master Open April 19 & 20. Overall, 1,894 student academic teams including 26,150 students from 48 states, the District of Columbia and seven foreign countries competed in the 200-question contest at their own schools, testing their knowledge in all areas of the curriculum, using specially programmed computer disks. Scores were based on speed and accuracy, with a perfect score of 2,000 possible, if all 200 questions were answered correctly within seven seconds!
In the junior high division, there were 147 teams competing. The top score was 1,696 and the mean score was 1,362.
The Apollo ninth-grade team scored 1,340 points, placing fourth in the state and 86th (top 59%) overall internationally.
The AHS ninth-grade team included Seth Bodnar, Rory Brown, Thomas Cameron, Jeremy Early, Joseph Early, Roel Flores, Tristan Hoover, Rob Milburn, and Adam Witt.
In the high school division, there were 838 teams competing. The top score was 1,844 and the mean score was 1,187.
The Apollo High School team scored 1,387 points, placing fifth in the state and 155th (top 18%) overall internationally.
The AHS team included Landon Basham, Michael Boone, A.J. Estes, Travis McMaine, Derek Morgan, Branden Payton, Elizabeth Rogers, Tyler Sagardoy, Ryan Seabolt, Daniel Tilford and Ian Wilkey.
Derby Festival Foundation Academic Challenge
The Apollo junior varsity quick recall team placed 2nd in team written assessment and 5th in quick recall in the 2004 Derby Festival Foundation Academic Challenge held April 23-24 at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville. In the junior varsity division, 39 teams participated (22 from the Louisville area and 17 from across the state).
In the tournament, the teams took a general knowledge test for playoff seeding and played three preliminary matches on Friday, April 23. The top 16, based on win-loss record and test score, advanced to a single-elimination playoff on Saturday, April 24. All participants received a tournament t-shirt, a certificate and a 2004 Pegasus pin. The top eight teams were awarded trophies. The top four teams received monetary awards from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation: first place - $1,000; second place - $500; third place - $300; fourth place - $200. DuPont Manual won the tournament for the 12th time by defeating Paul Laurence Dunbar in the championship match. Russell placed third and Johnson Central placed fourth.
The AHS JV team went 3-2 in the tournament and finished their season with a 26-9 record. They went 2-1 in the preliminaries and advanced to the “Sweet 16” as the No. 10 seed. AHS went 1-1 in the playoffs, defeating No. 7 seed North Oldham and losing to No. 2 seed Russell. Team captain Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 10 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Travis McMaine, Ryan Seabolt, Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Seth Bodnar, Tristan Hoover, Rob Milburn, Adam Watt, Jeremy Early and Joseph Early.This is the fourth time in six years that AHS teams have placed fifth or better in the tournament. They placed third in 1999 and 2000 and fourth in 2001.
The twelve teams not making the semifinals were given a team written assessment test and Apollo received a trophy for placing second in that competition.
Preliminary match results were: Round 1 – defeated St. Patrick 45-15. Round 2 – lost to Danville 38-24. Round 3 – AHS defeated Menifee County 40-22.
Playoff match results were: Round of 16 – defeated North Oldham 33-29. Quarterfinals – lost to Russell 46-24.
Kentucky Science Olympiad State Finals
The Apollo science team placed 15th overall in the 13th Annual Kentucky Science Olympiad State Finals held at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green on April 24. This is the ninth time AHS teams have competed in the KSO state finals. The competition involved 20 teams competing in 23 events.
Landon Basham and Michael Boone were awarded state champion gold medals for placing 1st in “Physics Lab.” Other team members placing in the top 10 in the state in their events were: 7th place, “Astronomy,” Will Pierce and Brandon Reynolds; 9th place, “Cell Biology,” A.J. Estes; 9th place, “Remote Sensing,” Drew Burden and Tim Hicks; 10th place, “Designer Genes,” Michael Boone; 10th place, “Science of Fitness,” A.J. Estes.
Also competing for AHS in the KSO state finals were Derek Morgan, Branden Payton and Andrea Stone.
NCEL
Four hundred, seventy-eight Apollo students competed in two divisions of the National Current Events League four-meet 2003-2004 season. In the grade 9 division, AHS placed 7th out of 17 schools from 12 states. In the grade 10-12 division, AHS placed 10th out of 57 schools from 23 states.
