Materials Needed :

  • At least 3 different colors of Post It Notes
  • Novel

Directions:

  • As you read the novel,
    1. Use one color of Post It Note, mark each reference to the “horizon.”
    2. Use a second color of Post It Note, mark each use of nature imagery.
    3. Use a third color of Post It Note, mark setting.
  • Once you have completed the reading of the novel, in a two page double -spaced essay, answer the following about the “horizon.”
    1. What is the importance of the concept of the horizon?
    2. How do Janie and each of her men widen her horizons?
    3. What is the significance of the novel's final sentences in this regard?
    4. After Joe Starks funeral, Janie realizes that “She had been getting ready for her great journey to the horizons in search of people; it was important to all the world that she should find them and they find her.” Why is this important “to all the world”? In what ways does Janie's self-awareness depend on her increased awareness of others?
  • Will we have class discussions over nature imagery and setting, so please be prepared.

Scale:

Essays will be scored on a scale of 1 – 5

5 = 50 points
4 = 40 points
3 = 30 points
2 = 20 points
1 = 10 points

Criteria:

Essays will

  • Will analyze the concept of “horizon” in the novel
  • Elaborate on a minimum of 3 examples of this concept
  • Include a minimum of 2 quotes per example as support for claims
  • Demonstrate organization through ordering of ideas and transitions
  • Use accurate grammar, mechanics, and punctuation
