Web Site Rules for Content and Style
Apollo High School

These rules are subject to the Daviess County Public Schools District policy for web content and style and should fall within all specifications of the District rules. The district rules can be found at http://www.daviess.k12.ky.us/technology/webrules.htm

Web Site Audience

The intended audience of the Apollo High School web site (www.ahs.dcps.org) is:

  • Prospective Students and Parents - the web site is the first look that people out-of-state have of our school. The home page should make a good first impression and give outsiders a clear path to the information they seek whether it is information the locations and characteristics of schools, or innovative programs. A site specific search engine should be posted prominently on the first page.
  • Parents- Parents seeking information about school schedules, lunches, policies and educational programs should find the answers to their frequently asked questions at the site.
  • Community- Realtors, industrial recruiters, and community members that have no direct ties to the school system should be able to easily locate demographic and districting information, performance reports and rankings, news items and event calendars.
  • Teachers- the web site should provide information and links that assist the teacher, schedules and calendars should be provided, the weekly memo and master schedule are expected.
  • Students- Pertinent information for students would be posted.
  • Alumni- Alumni should have a way of reporting their whereabouts and locating former classmates.

Web Site Structure and Style

With so many departments providing content, the necessity of a "stylesheet" or "templates" is apparent. Considerations for the following should be addressed:

  • Common backgrounds
  • Size of pictures, resolution and load time
  • Fonts- size and choice
  • Colors- main text, links, followed links
  • Frames
  • Scripting and plug-ins
  • Browser Compatibility
  • Navigation
  • Correctness of links
  • Clear way back to the home page
  • Appropriateness
  • Animations
  • Page size
  • Indexing
  • Proper use of meta name (used by search engines)

Content

  1. Content must adhere to the DCPS Acceptable Use Policy.
  2. Subject matter on the AHS web site must relate to curriculum, operations, events, programs or general information of the schools.
  3. All web pages should be grammatically correct and free of spelling errors, punctuation errors and other errors in mechanics.
  4. The home pages must include the post office address and phone number of the school and the e-mail address of the staff member most responsible for their site.
  5. Authors posting inappropriate (see AUP) content are subject to disciplinary review by the district personnel department.
  6. The school web will not advertise for outside entities, but schools may advertise products sold by the school. No direct sales over the web are allowed.
  7. A link should be provided to the DCPS web site at www.daviess.k12.ky.us
  8. If links take users to a site relating to the school but not hosted by the school or the DCPS web server, a "disclaimer page" must be displayed briefly to let users know that they have navigated to a remote site. "You are about to leave the DCPS web server. The contents on the following page are not published by the DCPS and the DCPS is in no way responsible for its content." Accordingly, an effort will be made to host all organizations (like band, sports and clubs) on the AHS web server.
  9. No student/individual pages that contain personal information (addresses, phone numbers) are allowed. Matching a photograph and a specific students name can be used, but with caution. It is much better, if students must be identified by name, to have a group of pictures and a group of names that do not necessarily match. The concern is stalkers that could be looking for specific students by name.
  10. All authors must obey the copyright laws and assume the legal liability of copyright infringement. Moreover, the use of original student art and compositions is strongly encouraged.
  11. When student work involves opinion, a disclaimer should be posted. Something like… "The ideas and opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the EAGLENET staff; the faculty, staff or administration of the school; nor those of the Daviess County Board of Education."
  12. Student work posted on the AHS web server must have the written permission of the student. If a student or his parent does not wish his work to be copied by a web visitor, an appropriate notice should posted.
  13. All outside links must be verified once a month for actuality (is it still there?) and educational appropriateness.
  14. Links to unfinished pages are not allowed. The text may occur on the page to let visitors know that more work is to be done, but the text should not link "under construction" pages.

Ownership of Web Content

  1. All pages posted on the AHS web server are the property of the DCPS.
  2. School Intranets that are accessible only from within the school building are allowed. It is recommended that these sites follow similar rules to the district rules.
  3. Schools and departments whose site is hosted by the AHS server must designate one person who assumes the responsibility for the appropriateness of content in their subdirectory.
  4. Only employees of the Daviess County Public Schools may ftp information to the web server.
  5. School hosted web servers must allow access by a DCPS designee.
  6. Schools must have a link to the district home page and a clear path back to their school home page. Teachers must have a link back to their school home page.
