Junior Newsletter - 2004
There is much to be done during your junior year and we do not want you to miss a thing! If you have questions, please come in and see me - or better yet, make an appointment so we can discuss the issue. Please continue to check the website at http://www.ahs.dcps.org and click on "Guidance News" and look for the Junior information section.
OPPORTUNITIES

Get college credit after your junior year at Owensboro Community and Technical College if you have at least a 3.0 gpa and acceptable ACT scores. (This is different from attending the technical school program we offer the students). See me for further information.

Apply now for National Youth Leadership Forum at educator@nvlforg or www.nvlforgor call 1-800-745-4918. There is a cost involved (approx. $2,000) . Attend or work a summer camp or volunteer to get job experience.

Governor's Scholars Program- This is a 5-week program at a KY college held in the summer. Applications will be available in the guidance office in November. Applicants are se lected on academics, leadership, community involvement, and essay. Listen for the announcements that I will make when I get the forms in.
- Governor's School for the Arts- This is a 3-week program in the summer at a college in KY. Applications will be available in the guidance office at the end of November. Auditions and application are required. Listen to the announcements as well.
The Owensboro Community and Technical College offers ACT PREP SESSIONS Call 686-4444 to sign up. The dates are as follows:
Just English - October 11,18, and 25 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. $24 plus $19 for book
Just Math - September 28, October 12 and 19 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. $24 plus $17 for book. (These are tentative dates that I was given---to confirm these dates, call OCTCS at 686-4444 and verify the times and dates with them) --Call and Make sure---
Apollo High School will offer some ACT Prep Workshops---Each session will cost $1.00 and will be held in the AHS Auditorium from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. On 9/28 and on 10/7 the Subject to be reviewed is English 10/5 and on 10/19 the subject to be reviewed is Math

Develop a Resume - www.resumeedge.com Click on Get Started Now. Save the resume on a disk so you can edit later. Writers will work with you on line to polish your resume. Also, ask now for letters of recommendation typed on letterhead from youth ministers, employers, scoutmasters or others. This is a requirement for graduation. It also is a terrific tool for applying for jobs, scholarships and college.
Are you going directly into the work force? Take the Work Keys assessment for job possibilities at Alcoa, Commonwealth, Dana, Hunter Douglas, Kimberly Clark, Owensboro Medical Health System, Swedish Match, Unilever and Barton Brands. Set up college visits NOW during Junior Year- Fall Break is October 14-15. Election Day Break is November 1- 2. No school on January 17, Feb. 21, March 11 and Spring Break is March 25-April 3,
The admissions number is included. Call the admissions office, set up a visit, and ask to attend a class in the student's area of interest. Also, ask to meet with the dean of the area where you have an interest. Ask about advising, college 4-year completion rate, job placement, and future jobs available in the area of interest.
Writing portfolio pieces---work hard on them now---Save on disk and keep up with them for editing later.
