SENIOR GUIDANCE NEWS # 1

It is hard to believe that we are back, and that you are a senior. I hope that you enjoyed your summer and are enrolled in some courses that will be beneficial to you for your future plans. Speaking of plans, I hope that you are in the process of doing things that will ensure that you achieve your goals. May will be here before you know it and I look forward to seeing all of you receive your diploma.

The annual Senior Parent Meeting will be on September 14 th at 6:30 in the auditorium. Your parents will need to call the Guidance Office or e-mail (kjohnson@dcps.org) me to inform us that they are coming, so we can prepare a packet for them.

At this time, there are 308 seniors.

  • Only 100 of you have taken the ACT or SAT.
  • 35 Seniors are in Reading Mentorship.
  • 25 of you are in Academic Intern.
  • 61 go to Technical College.
  • 120 of you Co-Op in some form.
  • 21 Seniors are in Yearbook.
  • 16 are on the Challenger Staff.
  • 10 in Band, 3 in Orchestra, 14 in Advanced Chorus.
  • There are 4 of you on Senior Staff in ROTC.
  • 28 of you go to OCC for classes.
  • 10 are on the Eagle High Trust Staff.
  1. Remember that you must have all of your credits to participate in Graduation Ceremonies in May.
  2. Any scholarship information will be distributed through letters such as these. There will be a number beside the scholarship and a box in the Guidance Office with the folders. Find the corresponding number and take an application if you are interested.
  3. If you need a letter of recommendation from myself or another teacher, please make sure that you allow two weeks to have this letter written. I will ask you to fill out a form. It is also appropriate to follow up with a thank you note.
  4. Seniors are allowed one college visit day this year. You must submit this request in Mr. Broughton’s office prior to going.
  5. If you are interested in playing sports in college at an NCAA Institution, you will have to file the NCAA Clearinghouse Form. The cost for this is $30, so I would make sure that you are interested in playing before spending the money. If a coach or college recruiter is requesting you to do this, please follow through and see me.
  6. If you ever stop by the Guidance Office and I am not here, please leave a note or let Ms. Tong or Ms. Stewart know that I need to see you.
  7. September 6-No School
  8. September 14- Regional College Fair at Brescia. We will leave at 9:35 and return around 11:00. Over 50 colleges and military will be there.
  9. October 14 & 15-No School
  10. November 1 & 2-No School
  11. We are going to have some ACT Prep Work in Math and English before the October test date. This will be in the auditorium in the evenings. Make sure that you keep posted on the dates. We will be charging a few dollars to attend.
  12. Ask your parents to check with their employers to see if they have a scholarship program.
  13. Tammy Brown works for the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation which offers financial assistance to students that have disabilities. We will be filling out a form in our CAP Group in September.
  14. If you missed your senior picture date and want to appear in the yearbook, there will be a make-up date in October. You will be allowed one head shot.
  15. I would encourage you and your parents to look closely before paying money for scholarship searches. Most all of the things that companies offer, you have access to yourself.
  16. If you have won an award, attended a summer program, or have been recognized in some capacity, please let me know so that we can acknowledge this. We try to keep tight records on all of your awards, including scholarships.
