BIOLOGY I Comp Semesters 2
Science Credits 1
This is a general course designed to illustrate the
similarities and differences between living things.
Topics covered include basic units on cells, genetics,
evolution, classification, research method, protozoans,
plants and a brief survey of the animal kingdom.
BIOLOGY AP Semesters 2
Science Credits 1
Prerequisite: Accelerated Biology An advanced biology
course for juniors and seniors. This is an advanced
placement course which utilizes a college textbook,
numerous laboratory investigations and library research.
The basic biological curriculum will be covered with
emphasis on the molecular and cellular functions of
life. Areas of concentration include: biological chemistry,
cells, energy transformations, molecular genetics,
heredity, evolution, principles of taxonomy and systematics,
ecology and survey of the five kingdoms: Monera, Protista,
Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Accel. Semesters 2
Science Credits 1
Prerequisite: One semester of Health and one year
Biology A two-semester course designed for students
that are interested in further study of the structure
and function of the various organ systems. Students
will be instructed in a complete anatomical dissection
with structure recognition and location. In addition,
the process of the anatomical structures will be studied
in some detail. This course is considered to be an
excellent opportunity for those students that are
interested in the health related careers.
ZOOLOGY Accel. Semesters 1
Science Credits 0.5
Prerequisite: Must have completed one course in Biology
This course consists of an in-depth study of the animal
kingdom including classification and identification.
Also included will be studies of the structure of
the organisms by means of laboratory dissection.
Outdoor Education/Natural History Accel. Semesters
1
Science Credits 0.5
This is a one semester course where students can learn
to identify birds and common bird songs, mammals,
reptiles, amphibians, trees, and flowers/weeds. Life
histories of some birds and mammals will be studied,
habitat requirements for some reptiles and amphibians
will be looked at as well as the habitat of some trees
and flowers. Some time will be spent outside.
MICROBIOLOGY Accel. Semesters
1
Science Credits 0.5
This is a laboratory -based class dealing with the
study, growth and identification of bacteria. The
morphological and biochemical characteristics will
be studied so microorganisms can be grown and identified
in the laboratory. Aseptic technique will be highly
stressed in the laboratory experiences. This course
is recommended for anyone wishing to pursue a health-related
career.
