LATIN I Accel. Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
**Any student signing up for first year of a foreign language must have a grade of "C" or better in his/her last English class. This course is designed to familiarize a student with the basics of the Latin language. Translation from the Latin to English will be stressed along with the study of English derivatives and the history and culture of ancient Roman people.

LATIN II Accel. Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
This course will consist of completion of basic grammar study and greater practice in translation. Selections will be translated from the story of Hercules and Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. Second semester we will also read selections from Latin poetry and dramas. Emphasis on English derivatives and Roman history and culture will continue as integral parts of the course.

LATIN III Honors Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
Third year Latin is a course that will take students beyond the elementary level of reading and understanding Latin literature. Cicero’s Orations Against Catiline provide the foundation for this course, for Latin without Cicero is like English without Shakespeare. In addition to Cicero, time will be spent translating post-classical Latin, written between 400-1500 A.D. This section emphasizes the continuing use of Latin as a means of communication many centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire.

LATIN IV AP Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
Fourth year Latin is designed to prepare the student for the Vergil AP Latin Exam. The basis of the course will be Vergil’s epic poem, the Aeneid. Parts of books I, II, IV, and VI will be translated from the Latin, and the remainder of the epic will be read in English. The student will also become familiar with pertinent Roman culture, social, and political history, as well as literary figures of speech and poetic scansion.
