Foreign Language Credits 1
Prerequisite: grade of 85% B- or better in an English
or Math class Spanish 1 is an introduction to the culture
and language of Hispanic people. The emphasis of this
class is on the development of basic language skills
including speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Students learn to speak about common events and situations.
Group, pair, and individual projects and presentations
encourage students to use the language in a casual setting.
The varied cultures of Spanish-speaking people are explored
through readings and activities.
SPANISH III Pre
IB Honors Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 2 Accelerated
with a minimum average of 85% B; or Spanish 2 Pre-IB
with a minimum of a C average; or special recommendation
of the previous Spanish teacher. Spanish 3 develops
communication skills beyond the basic level. Expanded
conversations and expressions of ideas based on topics
of student interest require students to incorporate
previously learned vocabulary with new information.
Students will learn to express more complex ideas with
more grammatical accuracy. Vocabulary expansion and
grammatical accuracy is developed through reading of
short stories, novelas, and articles from magazines
and newspapers. Students will use technology to prepare
presentations in Spanish. Pair and group activities
encourage and develop students' ability to speak. Active
class participation is required. The Pre-IB Curriculum
will include more reading, a strong grammatical component,
and communicative projects in order to prepare students
for the IB curriculum in level 4 and 5.
SPANISH IV AP/IB AP/IB Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 3 Pre-IB
with a C or its equivalent and recommendation of previous
Spanish teacher. Spanish 4 develops communication skills
to the intermediate level. A comprehensive review of
Spanish grammar provides students the tools they will
use to accurately communicate in spoken and written
language. Study of current events, topics of student
interest, Spanish literature, Latino literature, and
others will provide students a platform on which to
base their essays, projects, debates, and group activities.
Students will prepare for the AP exam by participating
in sample tests exercises. Students will prepare for
the IB orals and papers.
SPANISH V IB IB Semesters 2
Foreign Language Credits 1
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish 4 with
a minimum average of C or special recommendation of
previous Spanish teacher. Spanish 5 continues the IB
curriculum started in Spanish 4 IB. Students will complete
the IB orals and papers, and do individual research
in preparation for the oral presentation required for
the IB diploma. The study of the four skills, culture,
grammar, and vocabulary development is continued through
discussion of readings and current events. Conversation
and communication are emphasized.
