First cars aren’t always the best
by: Kendall Grider
The Mechanically Challenged Van Hater
Many people have told me how much they hated their first vehicle. It’s always old, used, a hand-me-down, and runs less than normal. But for some of us, the word car isn’t in our vocabulary.
Okay, I was a little iffy about saying what I drive. It’s quite embarrassing for some teenagers, but for me, I really don’t care what people think! I drive a 1992 Chevy Cobra van, and it’s anything but small. It’s actually not mine, I share it with my mom. Doesn’t sound very fun does it?
People always ask me why I haven’t been able to get a car for myself. Unfortunately, I don’t want to discuss the details but I just don’t have the money for one. So, I just drive the van. There are some bad things about the van that drive me insane. I get 7 miles to the gallon on a tank that takes about $75 to fill up. It doesn’t want to run right, it seems it goes from 0-60 in about 60 minutes. Now, I have problems with it overheating, and it takes about 4 quarts of oil a week. But complaining about it and fixing it are two different things.
I always wonder what other people think about their first car. I always say that there are people who have it worse. Some don’t even have a vehicle to drive at all. So I feel lucky that I have a vehicle to drive myself around. Sometimes though, it seems like it drives me. Or maybe it just drives me crazy. Either way, it’s not so fun driving my big van.
I overheard someobdy talking about me the other day. They were making fun of what I drive, likes it’s a big deal. I mean what’s wrong with people these days? I mean at least I can say that I’m content with driving it. It really doesn’t matter as log as I can get from point A to point B with ease. Sure it may take a while, but like I said, who cares what others think?
There are some OK qualities about driving the van. I can sit up high and see better. That’s always a plus for short people like myself. Also, people notice me and remember me from driving the van, or should I call it the Shaggin’ Wagon or the Mystery Machine. So it’s not quite as bad. I can also put 10 people as opposed to 4 people in my vehicle. Plus, more poeple can cruise with me and have an old lady chase me around a light pole like it happened this past summer.
At least I can say that I will eventially get a new car after I graduate. Or before depending how much life is left on the van. But even if I get a new car, I will never forget the memories in the van that may not have happened if I drove a car. So next time you see me in the van, maybe you’ll have a better out-look on it. Or maybe you might want a ride in my van a.k.a. The Mystery Machine.
