During Gooch’s high school years he was a very active young man. He was in FCA, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and of course football. This is where Gooch decided he wanted to become a football coach when he finished college. Gooch was inspired by his high school football coach, Jerry Griffin, who inspired him with his love of the game.

After high school, Gooch went on to Morehead State University to further his education. While attending Morehead, he played his favorite sport, football.

Since college, Gooch has been teaching for twenty years on and off. He has taught here at Apollo for ten years and also has been the head football coach. Coach Gooch has been a dedicated football coach for twenty-two years. During this time span he has coached high school and college teams. He coached at Morehead State University for eight years. Almost every student at Apollo that knows Coach Gooch is quite aware for his love of football and all the outstanding accomplishments he has had with Apollo’s football teams.
Coach Gooch said, “Apollo’s Football team is different from other teams I have coached because each team is unique and has its own chemistry and make-up. Also, the football coaching staff here is extremely close and I have met and formed some of my strongest friendships here.”

Although football is obviosly a major part of Coach Gooch’s life, he is also an outstanding teacher. Gooch teaches some health classes and many different types of physical education classes. His favorite class is definitly Speed, Strength, and Acceleration. When asked what he loved most about teaching he said, “Having the opprotunity to coach and teach young people and to see them mature and develop over their four years of high school.” Gooch stated, “Out of all the school’s he has taught at, Apollo has a lot more to offer the students in all areas of instruction, not just in sports or activites.

Oustide of his hectic schedule, Coach Gooch still finds time to spend with his wife Gina and their children Cati, Madison, and Mason. Coach Gooch also enjoys yard work and he is a Purple Martin Landlord. In which last summer, he collected twenty-eight pairs of Purple Martins.

To sum it all up, Coach Gooch is an outstanding football coach and teacher. As Apollo’s Head Football Coach, he has lead Apollo to some outstanding victories and championships. Apollo’s faculty and football team would definitely not be the same without him.
