The E-gals have everything they need to have a winning season this year and take the coveted third region crown. Four verteran seniors lead the squad and have recieved tremendous play from underclassmen. With the E-gals’ tenacious defense, the team is due for a big year.
In the season opener against Muhlenburg South, the girls took control and won 47 to 36 featuring Boo Lawrence leading the team in scoring with 21. Natalie Hardesty contributed with a solid 11 points.
Soon after the MSHS game, the E-gals went on the road to the Louisville Eastern Extravaganza. They played number eight ranked team Christain Academy out of Louisville. Considering the caliber of their opponent, the team fared well coming out with a score of 30 to 39 but losing the battle. Boo Lawrence had with 13 points.
In the team’s first district and first home contest against Owensboro High, defense was the name of the game. Apollo had to keep the Devils off the boards and give them less chances to score because of OHS’s height advantage over AHS. Brains soon triumphed over brawn and the E-gals outhustled and outsmarted the Lady Devils with the famous E-gal defense that is hard for any team to break.
Apollo forced Owensboro into handing over 27 turnovers.Katie Cecil lead the girls in deflections with 8. Boo Lawrence had 6 rebounds.
On the offensive end, Lawrence contributed 22. Whitney Odom had a spectacular night and led the team with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Her play in the game resulted in a double-double. Some of these points were from the free throw line at which Odom was 10 for 10. Whitney’s shooting from the line set a new school record.
The E-gals are now 1-0 in district play after putting Owensboro in their place with a winning score of 52-38 at Eaglerena.
The E-gals play big upcoming games at Catholic January 3th and at Daviess County January 7th. Both games begin at 7:30.
