Great start for Apollo swim team
by: Mitch Sharber
Reporter

The Apollo swim team has now competed in three meets this season, all of which, the swim team has performed very well in. In the first meet, versus Owensboro High School, Apollo came up short and finished second. But the team looked good, considering it was the first meet of the year.

In the Rick Cohn Invitational, both the boys and girls teams finished seventh out of fourteen teams, and finished seventh overall. There were slight improvements made by the team in this meet. Senior swimmer, Mitch Sharber, finished fifth in the fifty freestyle and fifth in the one hundred breast stroke. Sophomore Alyssa Mayes finished second in both the one hundred butterfly and the one hundred breast stroke. Freshmen Ian Flener, Kourtney Page, and Lauren Freels also placed well in the meet.

In the third meet versus Owensboro Catholic and Hopkinsville High School, Apollo finished third. Despite the poor overall finish in the meet, the team had significant improvements from almost every member. Which shows a promising future for the team in meets to come. Also in this meet, sophomore swimmer re-broke two school records in the one hundred breast stroke, and in the one hundred butterfly.

In practice, the team continues to learn and improve swim techniques and lowering times for each meet. Swim coach Bill Duncan, when asked what he thought about how the team was doing, responded, “The team looks better everyday, and it’s fun to watch the contiuous improvement.”

The team continues to look forward to upcoming meets, and is continuously improving individual times in every stroke. By the end of the season, Coach Duncan hopes to have everyone swimming to their best potential.

The team has two more meets in December, both of which are at the Healthpark. They have three more meets in the January. The season will end in early Februrary with the regional meet that will be held at the Healthpark this year.
