Intramurals ready to take off for 2005

During the wintertime, teenagers tend to feel extremely stressed and fatigued. Many times, they just don’t have the time to be involved in a day-to-day school-oriented sport during thewhole winter. Sometimes you just need an alternative to all the cold and negativity brought out during the winter time. For those who don’t compete in any school-oriented winter sports or aren’t extremely busy during the months of December through March, intramural basketball is an awesome way to have fun and still be able to be competitive with other teams.
Intramurals become more and more popular for students to participate in during the winter. Teams made up of a limit of twelve players are formed solely by the students themselves. Each team creates a name for their team and usually creates a t-shirt for each member to wear representing the name of their team and a number on the back. To compete, each individual must pay six dollars to cover costs for the referees and other official business.
Derek Bratcher, the captain of the “Wet Willies” has a positive outlook on the upcoming season.
“Alot of people don’t think we’re going to be any good, but we’ll see what happens. I think if everyone shows up for the rest of our practices then we’ll come together and have a competitve team,” he said.
Every year, a certain team is known as the most intimidating and most competitive above the rest. Last year, the “Blue Haze” and “Fried Chicken” were both well-known for their athletic lineups and impressive talent.
Another intramural competitor, Lance Camp, thinks the program is a lot of fun to be involved in and hopes this season will be as good as last year.
“Angry Crockpots were the ultimate. We were so awesome! This year, I think we’re gonna go all the way,” he said of his team.
Not only can boys play on the teams, but girls can as well. Some girls, such as sophomores Kacey Bratcher and Rachael O’Bryan, are involved on intramural teams and can’t wait to compete with the boys.
“All the guys don’t have faith in us girls, but we can play with them . I played basketball in a league for nine years of my life and I’m ready to play for fun and have a good time at the same time,” said O’Bryan.
Intramurals officially start during Christmas break. After the break, games will be held on weekends all the way until March, which is when the final tournament will be held to see which team is capable of being the best. So, for those of you who aren’t too busy this winter, come support the intramural teams and become a fan.
