Fall 2004 KMO
Two teams of Apollo academic team members competed in the Fall 2004 Knowledge Master Open Dec. 7 & 8. Student academic teams including 28,210 students from 48 states, the District of Columbia and nine foreign countries competed in the 200-question contest at their own schools, testing their knowledge in all areas of the curriculum, using specially programmed computer disks. Scores were based on speed and accuracy, with a perfect score of 2,000 possible, if all 200 questions were answered correctly within seven seconds!

In the junior high division, there were 151 teams competing. The top score was 1,639 and the mean score was 1,248. The Apollo ninth-grade team scored 1,313 points, placing third in the state and 61st (top 40%) overall internationally. The AHS ninth-grade team included Derrick Gauselman, Cheryl Kreke, Rose Krzton-Presson, Matt Reynolds, Courtney Schisler, Alison Schroeder, Lauren Thomas, Whitney Thomas, Chelsea Tipmore, Keith Warner and Kaytie Williams.

In the high school division, there were 881 teams competing. The top score was 1,849 and the mean score was 1,271. The Apollo High School team scored 1,270 points, placing 13th in the state and 479th (top 54%) overall internationally. The AHS team included Seth Bodnar, Caroline Buchanan, Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Tristan Hoover, Travis McMaine, Rob Milburn, Derek Morgan, Branden Payton, Elizabeth Rogers, Ryan Seabolt, Jermey Taylor, Lauren Thomas, Ian Wilkey and Adam Witt.
ASMA Contest #2

Fifty-eight Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #3 Dec. 9. The contest involved solving 7 math problems. Ian Wilkey had the top score of 4. He was followed by: tied for 2nd, Travis McMaine and Grace Oh; tied for 4th, Emilee Duvall, Charles Nix and Ryan Seabolt; tied for 7th, Casey Cambron, Brandon Cox, David Gant, Katie Hagan, Audra Harley, Eric Hodskins, Derek Holder, Natalie Johnson, Crystal Marsh, Nathan McDivitt, Eric Moore, Derek Morgan, Sean O’Bryan, Branden Payton, Jordan Perry, Christina Stodghill and Ashley Warren.
2004 PAA Quick Recall Tournament

The Apollo quick recall team placed fourth in the 2004 Pennyrile Academic Association Quick Recall Tournament at Owensboro Community-Technical College Dec. 18. The tournament featured 10 of the 15 PAA teams. Each team played five preliminary matches, with the top eight advancing to a single-elimination playoff, based on win-loss records and total points.

The Eagles (4-4), four-time PAA tournament champions, placed fourth as the #4 seed and brought their season record to 35-18. Daviess County (8-0), the #1 seed, won the tournament. Madisonville-North Hopkins (6-2), the No. 2 seed placed second. Owensboro (4-4), the No. 6 seed, placed third.

Apollo teams have advanced to the PAA tournament playoffs all 11 years. They have made the semifinals nine times, the finals six times and have never placed worse than sixth. AHS teams have an average finish of 2.7 and an overall tournament record of 67-17.

Preliminary match results were: Round 1 – lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins 37-8.
Round 2 - defeated Hopkins County Central 32-10. Round 3 - defeated Henderson County 29-8. Round 4 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 25-18. Round 5 – lost to Breckinridge County 25-20. Playoff match results were: Quarterfinals – defeated Owensboro Catholic 24-23. Semifinals – lost to Daviess County 31-18. Consolation – lost to Owensboro 25-19.

Team captain Elizabeth Rogers made the all-tournament team and led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match. She was followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt, Lauren Thomas, Thomas Cameron and Branden Payton.
2005 LAMP Invitational Scholars’ Bowl

The Apollo quick recall team made its second tournament appearance in the “Heart and Soul of the South” a memorable one by placing third in the LAMP Invitational Scholars’ Bowl Tournament at Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School in Montgomery, Alabama, Jan. 8. The tournament featured 28 teams from four southeastern states.
In the tournament, teams were divided into four seven-team pools and each team played six preliminary matches. Preliminary match results were used to narrow the field to a 16-team, single-elimination playoff, seeded by win-loss records and total points.
Walton H.S. A (10-0) of Marietta, Ga., the No. 1 seed, won the tournament by defeating Alabama School of Fine Arts (7-3) of Birmingham, Ala., the No. 6 seed, 270-235 in the championship match. Apollo (7-2), the No. 4 seed, and Hoover (Ala.) H.S. A (6-3), the No. 7 seed, tied for third.

Apollo, the 2003 LAMP Invitational Scholars’ Bowl champions, went 7-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents 1,740 to 1,410, and improved their season record to 42-20. They went 5-1 in the preliminaries and advanced to the playoffs as the No. 4 seed. They went 2-1 in the playoffs and placed third out of 28 teams. Team captain Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 7 tossups per match, followed by Ryan Seabolt, Lauren Thomas, Thomas Cameron and Ian Wilkey.

Preliminary match results were: Round 1 – defeated Central Macon (Ga.) H.S., 175-170. Round 2 – defeated Mountain Brook (Ala.) H.S. B, 200-110. Round 3 – lost to Holy Spirit H.S. of Tuscaloosa, Ala., 205-190. Round 4 – defeated Walton H.S. B 215-130. Round 5 – defeated Vestavia Hills (Ala.) H.S., 200-120. Round 6 – defeated Oak Mountain H.S. B of Pelham, Ala., 185-100.

Playoff match results were: Round of 16 – defeated No. 13 seed Northridge H.S. B of Tuscaloosa, Ala., 170-50. Quarterfinals – defeated No. 5 seed Ezell-Harding Christian School of Antioch, Tenn., 200-190. Semifinals – lost to No. 1 seed Walton H.S. A, 335-205.
