Mrs. Phelan:More than a teacher
by Kim Gregory
Senior Editor

Mrs. Beverly Phelan is an outstanding teacher here at Apollo High School. Mrs. Phelan teaches U.S. History, Geography, Government, World History, and Spanish. Her favorite class to teach would most deifintly be U.S. History because she loves it. She has been teaching at Apollo for sixteenth years now.

Outside of teaching Mrs. Phelan stays busy with her family and friends. She is married and has four children. Three of her children are boys and one is a girl. All of her children are Apollo High graduates.

Although Mrs. Phelan adores teaching and being with family and friends, she also enjoys walking, biking, and traveling with her husband. She also loves to spend time cooking wonderful meals for her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Phelan also enjoys visiting her mom and her four brothers and their families. You could definitly say Mrs. Phelan loves her family and makes them a huge part of her life.

Mrs. Phelan was inspired to become a teacher by her oldest brother, who was in graduate school when she graduated from high school. Her brother was working towards his PhD to teach college Physics. He even arranged for the necessary college loans and took her to Western Kentucky University. There he helped her with the application process and apply for housing. Although her brother influenced her teaching success later on in life, so did her very first college History teacher. Her History teacher in college helped her realize that she wanted to major in History and someday be a teacher. In the end, Mrs. Phelan ended up pursuing her career at Western Kentucky University.

Apollo definitly is fortunate to have such an outstanding teacher as Mrs.Phelan, but Apollo was not the first school she ever taught at. Her first year out of college, Mrs. Phelan taught for one year at Union County High School. After her first year being a stay-at-home mom, she taught at Daviess County High School. Considering she has experienced diffferent school environments, Mrs. Phelan says, “Apollo is the only place I want to teach. We have genuinly pleasent students, a nice working relationship among the faculty, and the kind of school spirit thats positive and productive. Apollo doesn’t have a negative attitude toward individuality.”

Mrs. Phelan says she enjoys teaching at Apollo because our students are so diverse and we have a good environment to accomodate their diversity.
Mrs. Phelan is surely more than a teacher. She is a friend, wife, mother of four, and a grandmother. Apollo High School would certainly not be the same without her.
