Vanderbilt ABC #28

The Apollo varsity and junior varsity quick recall teams in the Vanderbilt University Academic Bowl Contest XXVIII in Nashville, Tennessee on Oct. 22-23. The tournament featured 22 JV teams from 4 states and 51 varsity teams from 6 states.
Teams played four Swiss-paired seeding matches Friday, Oct. 22. On Saturday, Oct. 23, the teams were divided into five or six team pools, with each team playing four or five preliminary matches. Preliminary match results were used to narrow the field to 32 varsity teams and 16 JV teams for a single-elimination playoff.

Dorman A of Spartanburg, S.C. won their eighth Vandy ABC varsity tournament by defeating Brookwood of Snellville, Ga., 255-150 in the championship match. DuPont Manual A of Louisville and Walton A of Marietta, Ga. tied for 3rd. Indian Springs, Ala. defeated Russell, Ky. to win the JV tournament.

The AHS varsity went 5-5 in the tournament, advanced to the Vandy ABC playoffs for the 26th consecutive time and brought their season record to 20-8. They went 2-2 in seeding matches, 3-2 in the preliminaries and 0-1 in the playoffs as the No. 24 seed and placed 17th. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring, followed by Ian Wilkey, Travis McMaine, Ryan Seabolt and Branden Payton.

The AHS JV team went 1-8 in the tournament. They went 0-4 in seeding matches, 1-3 in the preliminaries and 0-1 in the playoffs as the No. 16 seed and placed 16th. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring, followed by Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Rob Milburn, Seth Bodnar and Jermey Taylor.

AHS varsity match results were: Seeding matches: Round 1 – defeated Smokey Mountain Home School of Newport, Tenn., 205-155. Round 2 - lost to Dunbar A of Lexington, 450-50. Round 3 – defeated Eastern of Louisville, 190-120. Round 4 – lost to Scott County of Georgetown, 180-140. Preliminaries: Round 1 – defeated St. Agnes Academy of Memphis, Tenn., 250-80. Round 2 – lost to Russell, Ky., – 310-135. Round 3 – defeated Fleming County B of Flemingsburg, 145-85. Round 4 – defeated Dunbar D, 335-200. Round 5 – lost to Brookwood of Snellville, Ga., 425-55. Playoffs: Round of 32 – lost to Dunbar A, 315-130.

AHS JV match results were: Seeding matches: Round 1 – lost to Corbin, Ky., 120-100. Round 2 – Lost to DuPont Manual of Louisville, 230-60. Round 3 – lost to Indian Springs, Ala., 160-50. Round 4 – lost to Loveless Academic Magnet Program of Montgomery, Ala., 215-50. Preliminaries: Round 1 – lost to Eastern of Louisville, 125-60. Round 2 – defeated Sheldon Clark B of Inez, Ky., 110-50. Round 3 – lost to Dunbar A, 340-160. Round 4 – lost to Ezell-Harding Christian School of Antioch, Tenn., 250-30. Playoffs: Round of 16 – lost to Dunbar A, 285-105.

Pennyrile Meet #3

The Apollo academic team hosted Pennyrile Academic Association meet #3 Oct. 25.
The varsity quick recall went 1-1, defeating Christian County 35-10 and losing to Madisonville North-Hopkins 30-21, bringing their Pennyrile record to 5-1 and their overall record to 21-9. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 11 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt, Travis McMaine, Branden Payton and Clayton Carden.

The junior varsity quick recall team went 1-1, defeating Christian County 29-2 and losing to Madisonville-North Hopkins 24-14, bringing their Pennyrile record to 3-3. Thomas Cameron led the team in scoring with 6 tossups per match, followed by Lauren Thomas, Tristan Hoover, Derrick Gauselman, Seth Bodnar, Rob Milburn and Jermey Taylor.

Pennyrile Meet #4

The Apollo academic team competed in Pennyrile Academic Association meet #4 at Hancock County High School Nov. 8.

The varsity quick recall went 2-0, defeating Grayson County 24-21 and Hancock County 32-14, bringing their Pennyrile record to 7-1 and their overall record to 23-9. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 13 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt and Travis McMaine.

The junior varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Grayson County 22-13 and Hancock County 25-8, bringing their Pennyrile record to 5-3. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring with 12 tossups per match, followed by Thomas Cameron, Tristan Hoover and Rob Milburn.

ASMA Contest #2

Seventy-two Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #2 Nov. 11. The contest involved solving 7 math problems. Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey tied for the top score with perfect scores of 7. They were followed by: 3rd, Branden Payton; tied for 4th, Nathan McDivitt, Travis McMaine and Todd Payne; tied for 7th, Casey Cambron, Chris Conkright, Brandon Cox, T.J. Daugherty, Rebecca Doom, Eric Hodskins, Crystal Marsh, Eric Moore, Blake Newman, Charles Nix, Amanda Saunders, Stephanie Schmitt, Grant Todd and Charity Young.

Hart County Invitational

The Apollo quick recall team placed 9th in the 22nd Annual Hart County Invitational Academic Tournament at Hart County High School in Munfordville, Nov. 13. The double-elimination tournament featured 16 teams representing each of Kentucky’s basketball regions.

DuPont Manual won the tournament for the seventh time, Dunbar placed second, Johnson Central Russell placed third, and Russell placed fourth.

The quick recall Eagles, the 2002 tournament champions, went 1-2 in the tournament and brought their overall record to 24-11. This the fourteenth time Apollo has placed 9th or better in seventeen Hart County Tournament appearances. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 11 tossups per match, followed by, Ian Wilkey, Lauren Thomas, Ryan Seabolt, Travis McMaine, Branden Payton and Thomas Cameron.

Match results were: Round 1 - defeated Paul Blazer 39-29. Round 2 – lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins 39-30. Round 3 – lost to Russell 53-28.
