The 2004-2005 swim season is looking promising for Apollo this year. With a new coach Bill Duncan on board and several new swimmers on the team. They are hoping to add a new life to the team.
Bill Duncan is a very qualified coach, who has received many awards himself for swimming. In the past, he has coached the local U.S. swim team, the Marlins, and has coached several nationally ranked swimmers. He hopes this year to help Apollo swimmers do their best and pertain a work out to each swimmer despite their swimming abilities.
Coach Duncan when asked about this season replied, “We have a mixture of experience and beginners. The experience is young and there is good leadership potential. The will learn a lot this year.” The team has their work cut out for them, with practice five times a day, four of which are at five-thirty in the morning. “They are a dedicated group to come and practice at five-thirty in the morning,” Coach Duncan replied.
The swim team also has many new swimmers. This year’s team includes five freshman swimmers, Ian Flener, Lauren Freels, Kourtney Page, Alannah and Wesley Whistle. Also three sophomore swimmers, Alyssa Mayes, Brhett Morcz, and Amanda Payne. The team also has only two senior members Justin Schwartz and Mitchell Sharber, which makes it a good rebuilding year, and looks to be a bright future for the team.
The swim team kicked off their season on November 16 against Owensboro High School, and had two more meets throughout the month of November. Most of the meets will be held in town at the Health Park.
In the meet against Owensboro, Apollo put up a good fight against the devils, but fell short. Apollo’s lack of members on the team really hurt them.
Coach Duncan was very pleased with the results, and is looking forward to improving the team and getting them ready to compete. He looks forward to future meets and everyonr on the team improving.
Good luck to the Apollo swim team in future events.
