Apollo pays homage to veterans of the community
By: Paul Palmer
Assoc. News Editor

On Tuesday, November ninth, Apollo held a special assembly to honor the vetarans of the Owensboro community. The assembly consisted of a guest speaker, performances by ROTC members as well as the chorus and Apollo’s very own Leah McDivit, who sang a heartfelt “God Bless America” in which the school and its visitors were asked to join in halfway through.

It was a solemn moment in which the students, faculty, and veterans came together to reminisce about the sacrifices that have been made for the safety of the American people.
Many people were reminded of the freedom that they have and who was responsible for providing it.

The veterans recieved pins and special recognition and a guest speaker talked about his sacrifices and why it is imperitive to be thankful to those who placed their lives on the line for the American people and the future generations.

Also, the students of Apollo were encouraged to take the time to thank the many veterans of their community for the deication and selflessness.

The ROTC performed a flawless march and wowed the crowds with the result of all of their hard work. The chorus performed three songs with the accompaniment of a special video depicting a medley of soldiers and American flags. Throughout the chorus’ performance, veterans stood when they were recognized and met much applause.
The ceremony offered a new perspective of the soldiers and many students walked away with newfound thoughts, or, in junior Maxson Overby’s case, ambitions for the future.
“I thought the ceremony was very motivational. I am kind of interested in looking into the military or the peace corps. I want to make a difference.” he says.
“ It was a very moving experience for me. It opened my eyes to just how special our veterans are,” said senior Salena Evans.

Patriotism was thick in the air and the ceremony was a touching reminder of why we should be greatful for our freedom, and glad to bein the United States of America..
