Job and Transition Fair, 2004
by: Michelle Harris
Associate Opinions Editor

Between twenty-five or thirty students will be participating in this years job and transition fair on Friday, November 12. It will be held at Western Kentucky University, which is located in Bowling Green . The job fair allows several opporunities for high school students, as well as classroom opportunities.

If you are wondering what exactly the job fair is. It is a chance for high school students to broaden their perspective of local career choices, practice their interviewing skills, develop relevant resumes, complete sample job applications, they learn what employers expect from them, and develop their awareness of recreational and leisure activities.
Mrs. Wimsatt will be sponsoring this years job fair. When asked why she had decided to be a part of the job fair she replied, “It gives several students an opporunity to gain experience through using the job hunting process.” She began to explain that students will be filling out applications, writing cover letters for a specific job or position. Students will be writing a real-world open response. Also, an interview will be set up with prospective employers to help better prepare students for job interviews they will face in their future. The students will also explore postsecondary training options . Students may even get the opportunity to win recognition for their attempts and efforts at succeeding productively.

They’ll also experience classroom opportunities. It provides unit lessons connecting to the Program of Studies. There is a connection through classroom activities to a Performance Event which provides practice for Real-life activities. The classroom provides Transition activities that can be connected to Transition Plan and IEP. Classrooms also provide an opportunity to complete an Open Response question with outside feedback.
There is a dircet link to the Job Transition Fair page if you log onto the River Region’s website. Or it can also be found at www.owensboro.k12.us/rrc.
