Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament.


Two Apollo quick recall teams participated in the Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament at Ezell-Harding Christian School in Antioch, Tennessee, Sept. 18. The tournament featured 55 teams from 6 states.

In the tournament, teams were divided into pools and each team played four or five preliminary matches. The top three teams from each pool advanced to a 32-team single-elimination playoff, seeded by win-loss records and total points in the preliminaries.
No. 1 seed, placed first by defeating No. 2 seed Dorman H.S. A of Spartanburg, S.C. in the championship match. DuPont Manual H.S. A of Louisville, Ky., the No. 4 seed, placed third by defeating No. 6 seed Daviess County H.S. in the consolation match. Apollo A went 4-1 in the tournament, outscored their opponents 1,380 to 740, and brought their season record to 6-1. They went 4-0 in the preliminaries, placed first in their pool, and advanced to the playoffs as the No. 10 seed. They went 0-1 in the playoffs and placed 17th. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 9 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt, Branden Payton and Derek Morgan. Apollo B went 2-3 in the preliminaries and placed 33rd. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring with 4 tossups per match, followed by Thomas Cameron, Rose Krzton-Presson, Seth Bodnar, Derrick Gauselman and Jermey Taylor.

Preliminary match results were: Round 1 – AHS A defeated Martin Luther King H.S. B of Nashville, Tenn., 260-200; AHS B lost to Milton High School of Alpharetta, Ga., 290-240. Round 2 – AHS A defeated Lincoln County H.S. C of Fayetteville, Tenn., 310-60; AHS B lost to Dunbar H.S. D of Lexington, Ky., 300-150. Round 3 – AHS A defeated Cookeville (Tenn.) H.S. B, 370-120; AHS B defeated Cookeville H.S. C, 160-150 in overtime. Round 4 – AHS A defeated Rossview H.S. B of Clarksville, Tenn., 320-200; AHS B defeated Richland H.S. of Lynnville, Tenn., 270-110. Round 5 – AHS A had a bye; AHS B lost to St. Andrew’s Episcopal School of Jackson, Miss., 290-200.
Playoff match results were: Round of 32 – No. 10 seed Apollo A lost to No. 23 seed Rossview H.S. A, 160-120.
Pennyrile Meet #2

The Apollo academic team competed in Pennyrile Academic Association meet #2 at Muhlenberg North High School Sept. 27.The varsity quick recall went 2-0, defeating Hopkinsville 30-8 and Muhlenberg North 22-4, improving their Pennyrile record to 4-0 and their overall record to 8-1. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 11 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt and Clayton Carden.
The junior varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Hopkinsville 19-2 and Muhlenberg North 11-3, improving their Pennyrile record to 2-2. Thomas Cameron led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match, followed by Roel Flores.

Varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities - 1st, Elizabeth Rogers; 2nd, Ashley Boswell; tied for 4th, Caroline Buchanan and Delana Hill. Language Arts - 2nd, Carrie Gentry; tied for 4th, Elaina Reid and Meghan Van Bussum; 6th, Natalie Johnson. Social Studies - 1st, Clayton Carden; 2nd, Rachel Gentry; 3rd, Ed Cureton; 4th, Dayved Bell. Science - 1st, Branden Payton; 2nd, Kevin Reel; 4th, Derek Morgan. Math - 1st, Ian Wilkey; 3rd, Ryan Seabolt; 4th, Rebecca Doom; 5th, Casey Cambron.
Junior varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities - 3rd, Joseph Early; 5th, Adam Witt; 6th, Keith Warner; 7th, Jamie Sosh. Language Arts - 1st, Courtney Schisler; 2nd, Seth Bodnar; tied for 5th, Rose-Krzton-Presson and Alison Schroeder. Social Studies: 1st, Thomas Cameron; 2nd, Derrick Gauselman; 4th, Whitney Thomas; 6th, Jeremy Early. Science: 2nd, Roel Flores; 3rd, Madeline Neel; tied for 4th, Jermey Taylor and Wesley Whistle; 7th, Andrew Stelmach. Math: 1st, Wei Ji; 2nd, Matt Reynolds; 3rd, Grace Oh; 4th, Rob Milburn; 7th, Chelsea Tipmore; 9th, Cheryl Kreke.
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Earlybird Tournament The Apollo High School quick recall team placed second in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Earlybird Tournament October 2 in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. The tournament featured eight teams from three states.

The preliminaries consisted of a round-robin in which the team played each of the other seven teams once. A two-bracket playoff followed, with the top four seeds playing for the championship in the upper bracket.
Loyola Academy A (6-3) of Wilmette, Ill., the No. 3 seed, won the tournament by defeating No. 2 seed Apollo (7-2) 235-200 in the championship match. Decatur (Ill.) McArthur H.S. (8-1), the No. 1 seed, placed third and Culver (Ind.) Academies (4-5), the No. 4 seed, placed fourth.

Apollo went 7-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents 1,930 to 1,350 and brought their season record to 15-3. They went 6-1 in the preliminaries and advanced to the playoffs as the No. 2 seed. They went 1-1 in the playoffs. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 7 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt, Branden Payton, Thomas Cameron and Jermey Taylor. Elizabeth Rogers earned a medal for placing second in individual scoring among all participants in the preliminaries.
Preliminary match results for Apollo were: Round 1 – lost to Decatur McArthur H.S., 280-190. Round 2 – defeated Bloomington (Ill.) H.S., 230-135. Round 3 – defeated Loyola Academy B, 260-90. Round 4 – defeated Loyola Academy A, 230-210. Round 5 – defeated Streator (Ill.) H.S., 165-60. Round 6 – defeated Dwight (Ill.) Township H.S., 250-55. Round 7 – defeated Culver Academies, 135-115.
Playoff match results were: Semifinals – defeated Culver Academies, 270-170. Championship – lost to Loyola Academy A, 235-200.
ASMA Contest #1

Fifty-nine Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #1 Oct. 12. The contest involved solving 7 math problems. Ryan Seabolt was the top scorer with a score of 6. He was followed by: tied for 2nd, Ian Wilkey, T.J. Daugherty, Nathan McDivitt and Ashley McMichael; tied for 6th, Natalie Johnson, Crystal Marsh and Travis McMaine; tied for 9th, Casey Cambron, Branden Payton, Kevin Reel, Audra Harley, Eric Moore, Charles Nix, Amanda Saunders, Stephanie Schmitt and Grant Todd.
