The Apollo girls and guys golf team excelled towards the end of the season. AHS sent the entire boys team and girls team members Gabrielle Murphy and Bretnae Turner.
To advance to state, the boys shot a 310 at regionals to win a ticket to state. This score tied the school record for lowest 18 hole team score. Chris Conright shot a 74, Chris Sampley a 76, Jansen Smith a 78, and Trevor Scott an 82.
The boys prepared for the tournament at Indian Hills Country Club in Bowling Green by keeping up steady practice. “I tried to keep a consistant swing and my thoughts together,” said junior Chris Sampley. The boys also worked on their short game to prepare for the big tourney.
At state the team shot a 342. Some butterflies and adrenaline may have been to blame for the pedestrian score. The difficult coursewas also a hindrance to the boys.
This was the first time the boys golf team had been to state since 1978, an accomplishment worthy of praise.
The girls state tournament was also held in Bowling Green. G and Bretnae went to the Country Club to practice before tee time tournament day.
Regional champion, Gabrielle Murphy, shot an 81 at region to qualify for state. Teammate Bretnae Turner was there to support her and qualify for her first state tournament as a freshman.
Neither of the girls made it past the first round of state. Nerves and maybe a little fate had to do with the girls play that day as they did things they normally could have overcome in regular season play.
