Eagle’s Soccer teams fighting in district
by Matthew Johnson
Sports editor
The Apollo E-Gals soccer team fought well but fell short in the first round of district play. On Oct. 19 the E-gals faced off against Catholic it what was going to be a slugfest. Earlier in the season the girls lost to catholic twice but this game was different. The fans in the stands were going crazy and could wait for the game to start. The smell of rain was in the air and everyone could see the look of pride on the E-gal’s faces as they came out on the field. The seniors knew it might be the last game they play. During the first half Apollo dominated by keeping the ball on Catholic’s side of the field and this showed Catholic that Apollo was not going to go down with out a fight. The game was really close with Mackenzie Stone just missing scoring on three occasions. Catholic struck hard and fast in the in the final minutes of the first half.
The E-gals went into the half losing 1-0 but they were not finished yet the pesky E-gals came out in the second half with just as much intensity as the first half. The Second Goal by Catholic was scored early in the second half on this goal one of Apollo’s players Amy Johnson got hit in the face and black out and was down for several minuets. This was a blow to Apollo’s mid field. The girls fought very hard and scored a goal with 10:00 mins. to go in the game. The goal was scored by Haley Rinerson. This set a fire in the stands and Apollo was back in the game. Late in the game the E-gals had one last chance Amy Johnson got the ball at med field and went around to defenders her to a shot but the goalie made a great save and Apollo lost 2-1.
The Eagles boys soccer team also started out in district very well but fell to owensboro. The boys split the season series with owensboro but this game was a lot more important to both team.
The boys were playing well and scored early on Owensboro and owensboro struck in the same fasion as the Eagles. The guys fought hard and ended up loseing 3-2.
Both soccer teams would like to thank the fans for their support this season and they hope they continue their support next year.
