Natural disasters
by: Paul Palmer

The news of the past few months has been largely about the hurricanes on the coast are striking a devastating blow to Florida.

To accompany the disaster that the hurricanes have wreaked, Mount Saint Helens has erupted for the first time since May eighteenth in nineteen-eighty. Destruction of an enormous magnitude occured, forever burning the memory of the volcanic onslaught into the minds of many. The eruption brought about the decimation of forestial life, leaving nearly two hundred-and thirty square miles of forest buried under ash and magma.
The nine- hour eruption brought about a rain of ash that fell over Washington state. Though the eruption’s duration was lengthy, the amount of time it took to change the landscape was far less.

Unlike the volcanic activity at that time, the recent eruption was much less violent. This time there was merely a massive amount of steam flowing upward.
Unlike the recent eruption of Mount St. Helens, the hurricanes plaguing the Florida area are much more catastrophic. The hurricane drove several people away form their homes in order to divert the massive damage that ensued and the property damage is somewhere in the billions.

There are several relief groups whose uniform purpose is to provide aid to those affected by the storms.

Among the destrucion of homes and businesses is the destruction of Florida’s citrus crops. The production of the citrus crops is going to be the lowest in eleven years, placing huge setback for the Floridian economy and those in the community.
