Town Square is for “Squares”
by: Josh Hamilton
Associate Entertainment Editor

Ok, so it’s Friday night and everyone is looking for something to do. The people with any ounce of school spirit are going to the game. A good sum of high school students are working, many are hanging out at their friends’ houses, and the other s are sitting around looking for something better to do.

Oh, but wait, I’m leaving a large group of students out, you know the ones I’m talking about, the so called “alternitive” crowd. The kids who if they took all their flair off (meaning: buttons, chains, safety pins, various spikey objects, colorfull beads, hair clips, hats, and any other random heavy objects sticking to their bodies) they would lose fifteen pounds in a matter of seconds (and feel a lot better, too).

If you don’t realize, since Hot Topic came to town this style of dress has become the norm and not the exception. If you think your doing a service to the alternative scene by shopping at this store, you are being explioted. Do you honestly think the CEO of Hot Topic wears anything remotely close to what is sold in the store? He is just sitting back in a suit and tie laughing at the fact that you are paying sixty bucks for a pair of five dollor slacks that he riped up and hung chains all over.

Don’t get me wrong, I love these people and I myself get sucked into the mall’s charm. If you saw the people I hang out with, you would realize that my purpose in my opinions is to stop my friends from going to the mall all the time, and start doing something worth while with their time.

Just for a second, let’s sit back and figure out the purpose of a mall. That would be for various businesses to sell products in a central location so both the consumer and the producer can benefit. But how do you think it feels for the store owners to have a bunch of the same people who come to their stores day after day and don’t buy anything. All they do is run from Rebah and play DDR.

The mall is cool to a certain extent, like when you have some purpose in being there. Some legitiment reasons for going to the mall include shopping, eating, playing games, and maybe hanging out for a minimum amount of time and only every once in a while. But these days, I hear of people going to the mall for hours on end every day of the week . Now if you ask me, it’s getting ridiculous. What business does someone have spending hours at the mall on a Tuesday night. Whether you realize it or not, there are better things to do in this town. Go to the movies, chill at Beyond The Brim, do something outside, hang out at a friend’s house, go to a local concert and support the music scene you try so hard to be a part of , or go to the Excecutive Inn at three o’ clock in the morning and tackle Jimy C Heese in front of the clerk. But if all else fails do what me and my best friend Matt Grey did, hang out at Wal-Mart and adopt the term “Wal rats”.

The days of the mall rats are over and no matter how hard you try you will never be as cool as Jay and Silent Bob. So do me a favor and ease up on hanging out at the mall. The mall will mean a lot more to you if you don’t spend all of your spare time there. You will find there is more to life than the mall, and there are way better things to do with your time, then being a mall rat.
