What’s love got to do with that?
by Eric Pinkston
Associate Opinions Editor

What is love? Well, I’m sure you see enough of it to make your own judgements. Maybe you’re even in love with someone. Well, it’s not my intention to bash anyone or rant like a lunatic, but what many people think is “love” really isn’t. This is especially true with high school kids.

After all, we’re just reaching physical maturity. Well, that doesn’t mean we’re mentally mature yet. Sadly, a lot of us still have a long way to go before we’ll act our age. Don’t believe me? Try going through the cafeteria between periods and you’ll hear so much about how Juliet loves Romeo. The next day, you’ll hear about how she started hating him. OK, well, my first point is love needs no gossip. Isn’t it better to leave love between the lovers rather than telling the whole school about it? But back to the point, love does not involve gossip. And while we’re at it, neither does partying. It’s just plain immature to do that kind of stuff anyway.

For my second point, PDA is not love. PDA, for the uninitiated, means Public Display of Affection. In other words, it’s against the rules to hug/kiss/whatever with your significant other in school. If done so and caught by Mr. Travis, you’ll get a DM. To those who do PDA and don’t get caught, the joke is on you because you’re not proving anything.

You’re just showing how shallow you are. Love’s more than just a physical thing, and if you do think it’s only a physical thing, that’s lust -- not love. If you have been reading up on your Bible, you’ll know that lust is one of the seven deadly sins. So you may want to back away from that stuff until you have found someone you know you can truly love.
But then that’s the really tough thing to convince people of. Juliet loves Romeo and she’s ever so certain that they’ll be together forever. Well, life doesn’t work out like fairy tales do... then again, Romeo and Juliet ultimately ended up dead.
