Although the girls cross-country team was without their lead runner for a duration of the season, all was right with the rest of the team, and each runner made up for the loss of Ashlee Brown in their own individual way.
For instance, junior Makenzie West and Senior Christina Stodghill both have stepped up greatly for the E-gals and have run stronger than they have in previous years. Although Brown’s usual times and places haven’t been matched up to yet, she is back in uniform and finally working her way into shape again, just in time to compete in the prestigous regional and state meets.
The annual city-county Invitational, held on Oct. 5th, was a competitve race between district rivals Daviess County, Owensboro, Catholic and Apollo. Brown, still in recovery from her shin splints, raced well and placed sixth overall, earning herself a name on the first-team City-county. Placing on the second-team were Stodghill (ninth; 22:12), Beth Ewing (eleventh; 22:33) and Madeline Hunt (fourteenth). Overall, the E-gals placed runner-up to winner Daviess County.
The boys cross-country team also placed runner-up to none other than Daviess County at the city-county meet. Although Daviess County finished with a perfect team score of fifteen points, several AHS boys ran extremely well; a few even earning a PR for the season. Senior Mitch Sharber placed sixth to lead Apollo with a personal best time of 17:40.
“Ben Hawes is the hardest course in the city, because of the hills and rough terrain, but I like it alot, and I usually run well on it,” Sharber explained.
Behind Sharber was freshman Tyler Dickinson with a tenth place finish and a time of 18:04. Freshman Chris Stodghill ran for twelfth at 18:16. The other two runners placing for Apollo were junior Josh Broadley (20th) and freshman Todd Dickinson (24th). Sharber earned first-team all city-county while Stodghill and and Tyler Dickinson earned second-team all city-county honors.
