A Common Place for Our Youth
By: Josh Hamilton
Associate Entertainment Editor

In the lives of teenagers today you can’t help being characterized by the places you hang out, whether it be the mall, a random parking lot, or at the nearest party. But there are a few problems with these places that that can cause some negative effects on your life.

The mall closes too early and people have a tendency to spend too much money. Parking lots are used for parking cars and you can get fined for loitering. Parties have a tendency to involve drugs and alcohol and that stuff can get you into trouble also. I am sure many of you are thinking where else will we hang out if we don’t hang out in these places. Well, there is a common place for the teens of Owensboro to go and be free from judgment and the constant pressures of keeping up with friends.

Common Ground teen center has been around for about two years and is still fairly unknown or at least unvisited by many teens. It’s open from 7 to 11 on Friday and Saturday nights. Common grounds atmosphere is very urban looking and up beat but can also provide a place to just chill and hang out with friends. One bad thing about entertainment in Owensboro is that everything cost money and a teenager can easily spend 20 dollars in one night. But Common ground is fairly cheep it cost 3 dollars for four hours of entertainment. Some of the places main attractions include a cyber café where you can chat on AIM or surf the internet. They also have a rock wall and a caged basketball court for those people who like to stay fit. And for all you table sports junkies they have foosball, ping pong, and pool. After you get all your energy out with these activities common ground has enough couches to furnish four houses. And also newly added is a snow cone machine. Although these events are at common ground all the time there are special events that go on also. Common ground has become Owensboro’s main concert venue and has had bands like Disciple, Jonah 33, Seventh Day Slumber, Side walk slam, The Elms and many more. And for all you aspiring Musicians Common Ground holds an open mic night the last Saturday of every month. So if your ever looking for something new to do on a Friday or Saturday night or hear about the next big concert come to us.
